Please help Hanan be reunited with her family

Hanan Al Taha is a Syrian refugee who has found herself alone in Canada, the only young woman in this situation.  With your support, we want to reunite her with her family in Canada.

Hanan and her family escaped Syria and fled to Lebanon.  When Hanan (as an adult over 18) was accepted for resettlement in Canada as a government-sponsored refugee, she had been reassured that her parents and younger siblings would follow her here.

This did not happen.

It is difficult or maybe impossible to imagine what it must be like to flee a war, spend time in limbo in a camp, leave your family and everything and everyone you know behind, to land in Canada on a dark winter night with nothing.

This young woman found furniture on the street, she had to figure out how to get to school so that she could learn French, how to get to the doctor on her own not knowing the culture or language, the dentist, the grocery store.

Everything was completely different and she was alone.

A network of caring Canadians has formed a circle of support around Hanan. She is doing well, and prays everyday that she will be reunited with her family.

According to Human Rights Watch, more than 1 million Syrian refugees in Lebanon are registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.  Lebanon’s residency policy makes it difficult for refugees to have legal status, heightening risks of exploitation and abuse and restricting refugees’ access to work, education and health care.

Hanan’s younger siblings have not had access to school for years.  Her father can only work intermittently because of policies affecting Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Health care is out of reach.

Hanan is breaking new ground in Canada. She is doing everything she can to prepare herself to make a significant contribution to Canada.

We are setting up a trust account to collect the funds required to bring her parents and four younger siblings to Canada and to sustain them for their first year here.

A committee has been established to oversee every aspect of the family’s arrival and resettlement in Canada.

We have helped over 80 Government-sponsored Syrian refugee families in the Outaouais region. Through donations, the families have been set up in their homes,  clothes and toys have been provided, as well as school supplies for the kids and language tutors.

By far, our highest priority and that of the 157 Canadians in the network we call Hanan’s Canadian Family, is to raise the funds needed to reunite her with her family.

Our overall objective of raising $35,000 will support this family of six during their first year in Canada.

Good news! The sponsorship application was submitted to Quebec by Grace United Church on December 21, 2018.

With the Quebec quota filling up quickly and the final window closing at the end of January, bridge financing loans were provided by two individuals in order to meet the $15,000 threshold, so that the sponsorship application could be submitted as soon as was possible.

We need to keep the fundraising momentum going in order to repay these individuals and to raise the total amount needed to cover the family’s first year in Canada.

Hanan’s story has resonated with the media, with coverage in french and english, helping to spread the word.

My hearfelt thanks to all of you.

Hi everyone!

A quick update.

My relationship to the beneficiary of this fundraising campaign (the Al Taha family) is that of their sponsor to bring them to Canada. I am setting up an account in my name that your donations will be deposited into. The funds will be withdrawn by me and dispersed to the Al Taha family in kind and directly, eg Our team will use your donations to pay for their relocation to Canada (travel costs), to rent and set up an apartment for them, to provide a monthly allowance for their first year in Canada, amoung other essentials. Thank you for your support!!!

Thank you for your very generous donations! Your donations will be used to finance the sponsorship of the 6-member Al Taha Syrian refugee family who will be reunited with their daughter Hanan who is here in Canada on her own. A savings or trust account will be established, in accordance with government sponsorship guidelines. The funds will be made available to the Al Taha family under the guidance of our resettlement committee, members of which will provide advice and guidance to the family on managing the family’s expenses in Canada. Initially, funds will be used directly by our team to finance the relocation of the family to Canada.
Thank you for helping make this happen! ❤️❤️
