Plan Ireland - Nepal Trek

Next April, Mitchell and I will join one of Plan International Challenges, 10 day Trek in the Himalayas.
This adventure will give us the opportunity to see first-hand the works of Plan International in Nepal and through it we wish to help build awareness on the importance of the projects they are involved in.
As we are covering for the cost of the trip ourselves, all the funds collected will directly go to support Plan International’s projects.
In April 2015, Nepal was hit by one of the most deadly earthquakes in its history. The projects we will be visiting will highlight Plan International’s work since.
Last year the group visited the temporary learning spaces that Plan had built to ensure children could return to school as soon as possible, protecting their future education, but also giving them a safe space to gather, learn and play.
On this trip we will be visiting these schools again, but this time in their rebuilt classrooms – ensuring a more permanent structure and future for these schools and the children they serve.
Another project Plan is involved in and we will have the chance to see is a Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) – groups of 10-25 women, who with training and support from Plan International, who govern and manage their own savings and loans. Each member contributes a fixed weekly amount, creating a savings fund from which members can borrow. These groups give women financial independence, and enable them to set up and expand small businesses. Financial training and access to microfinance will lead to greater food security and access to health and education for these women and their families – helping them take the first step out of the cycle of poverty.
We are both very excited by this opportunity to get a glimpse into the lives of extraordinary communities, supported by Plan International. However we want to make sure that through this adventure we can help build awareness are all that can still be done.
