A string of deadly wildfires impacted hundreds of square miles in Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma & Colorado in early March, 2017. The fire killed seven people, scorched more than 2 million acres of land, burned homes to the ground, & thousands of animals died.

As Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, I am inspired by the grassroots support from Michigan farmers and so many in our rural communities who are hauling relief supplies to the affected areas right now.

My husband Lyle & I will match the first $3000 in contributions made for recovery efforts in these states. This is personal for us. We lived in Kansas for nearly a decade. Our daughter was born there. These are our friends and colleagues who have lost nearly everything.

Money raised will be used for fencing supplies, hay transportation, animal feed, veterinary supplies, and other needs in the affected areas.  There has been rain in the area these past two days but cattle cannot be put back on pasture without fences. The critical time to provide help will be over the next three weeks.  I will consult with Michigan convoy leadership and my colleagues in Kansas and Oklahoma to determine the most effective use of these funds.

Recovery and rebuilding has been an all volunteer effort.  Please join me in this community of Americans doing what they can to help those who have lost so much. #WildfireRelief  #MichiganConvoy
