Dear Jackson community,

As many of you may know, Patrick and his family endured a roller coaster of a year with surprise medical issues starting this past September. PK was diagnosed with endocarditis and underwent multiple heart surgeries.  PK and his family are thankful for all the kind and thoughtful calls and texts they have received from everyone through all of this. For those who aren't aware of the entire story, here is a  brief summary to fill you in.

It started in late September with  a lingering sense of fatigue, loss of a few pounds and a cleared visit to the doctors office.  A few weeks had gone by and PK felt like symptoms were lightening up and things were getting back to normal.  Then the third week of October came around and the fatigue and lack of appetite returned, no motivation followed close behind. PK and his family wasted no time and went to the ER. PK was put through a gauntlet of tests but everything came back negative or normal. At 44 years of age and down almost 60 pounds a matter of months,  PK knew nothing about this was normal.

Now, well into December and many pokes and prods later, finally something came back suspicious. PK's C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were very high, meaning his body was fighting hard, but oddly enough the white blood count was normal. This prompted a bone marrow biopsy on December 26th . The biopsy came back with bacteria growing in the bone marrow, this moved things along quickly.

36 hours after the results came back from the biopsy, PK and his family were at the University of Utah. The diagnosis of endocarditis was made. After 4 days of cleaning PK's blood of the bacteria and a strand of strep, on January 3rd he underwent an 11 hour open heart surgery that replaced 2 valves. During the surgery, PK lost the electrical current from the top to the bottom of his heart. On the 14th PK had another surgery to put in a pacemaker.

This GoFundMe page is being started as a way to support Patrick, his loving wife, Mary Katherine, and their wonderful family. Anyone who has met Patrick, even briefly, can tell that they are in the presence of a truly special person.  Patrick exudes passion in all areas of his life, and he has touched so many people in his 44 years through his amazingly authentic and generous heart. Please consider donating to support King family during this time – any amount at all would be deeply appreciated.
