In 2012, the most recent data available, breast cancer mortality was 42% higher in Black women than in white women.
The current breast cancer epidemic impacts communities unequally and leads to unacceptable differences in who developes Breast Cancer, who gets high quality and timely treatment, and who dies from it. Despite the significant amount of outreach that has been brought to this matter, Black women excessively die from Breast Cancer more than any other ethnic group. In order to address and end the edidemic in the Black community, we must tackle the root cause of these health inqualities. Recognizing this and the difficult journey to wellness made by Breast Cancer patients, survivors and their families, Anita T. Conner and her daughter Kerri who are both breast cancer survivors, along with their families created Praise Is the Cure ( PITC ), a Breast Health Initative.
Praise Is the Cure is a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt not for profit organization that was launched in 2005. We strive to provide programs that uplift patients, celebrate survivors, help promote breast cancer awareness and aid in research for Black women.
Since its inception, PITC has reached over 100,000 Philadelphia area residents. Our signature event, Praise Is the Cure, Week of Hope, Health and Healing enables women to receive mammograms and other health screenings each year, celebrates patients and survivors and educates communites that are losing the fight from the lack of breast health education. Each year, PITC is changing the story and realigning the statistics.
In 2016, there are expected to be 30,700 new cases of Breast Cancer and 6,310 among black women.
