Pit Horse Statue

An idea to erect a Pit Horse Statue in Rotary Park, Kurri Kurri was formed by a small group of locals.
It is proposed that the statue would be a celebration of the skill and training of the pit horses that worked in the coal mines of the South Maitland Coalfields. Pit horses played an integral role in coal production prior to the introduction of technology of mining as they were used to haul coal due to their strength, efficiency and temperament. The pit horses also formed strong bonds with the miners during their working life.
The project has widespread support within the community and will complement the existing cultural, historical and tourism assets within Kurri Kurri. Cessnock City Council have included in statue in the masterplan for Rotary Park. Towns With Heart Inc has agreed to auspice the project and assist with fundraising through grant applications and sponsorships.
A committee of local residents has been formed. They have started to raise awareness of the project within the local community and have commenced some local fundraising activities, events and country music fundraisers.
OBJECTIVES
· To establish a lasting memorial to the pit horses that worked in coal mines in the South Maitland Coalfields
· To provide an educational display that demonstrates and informs about the important role of pit horses in coal mines
· To create an outdoor art installation that demonstrates a significant component of local history
· To acknowledge the skill and training of pit horses
· To celebrate the strong relationship between miners and pit horses
· To attract visitors to the area
· To add to the visitor experience in Kurri Kurri by complimenting the Murals Project
