Bring Piper Dellums to our school!

As part of our Black History Month study in my middle school English classes at St. Aloysius School, my students watched the Disney Channel original movie, "The Color of Friendship." It is the true story of Maurhee Bok, a white exchange student from apartheid South Africa, and Piper Dellums, the African-American daughter of a United States Congressman. Against the odds, the two form a friendship that ends up changing both of their lives.

After watching the movie, our class discussed how the events relate to their lives today, participated in unity projects, and engaged in a literary study of "Simunye," the short story written by Piper Dellums that inspired the Disney film. By the grace of God, I found that Piper travels the country to share her story, and she has graciously agreed to come to Birmingham and speak to our class on March 22! This is an incredible opportunity for my students that may not come around again, and we would so much appreciate anything you would be able to give to help us get our speaker to Birmingham! We are all so excited to meet the real person behind our studies and discussions, and we give all glory to God for providing for us in His perfect way. Thank you in advance for your time, prayers, and support!

PIPER DELLUMS:

Piper Dellums is "an accomplished writer, producer, inspriational speaker, and entertainment executive. Piper spent years in South Africa at the delicate time of the fall of Apartheid and release of Nelson Mandela." She was motivated by the poverty level she saw, and she helped to open Amandla, an "exhibit of South African art to benefit the Nelson Mandela Children's Foundation." She is also responsible for "building homes post Apartheid in Soweto, South Africa and joining a delegation of medical, legal, and documentary film maker professionals to build hospitals and administer medical and missionary needs to over 5,000 Kenyans maimed after the bombing of the American Embassy in Kenya. Piper would travel later with this same delegation to Nkamba in Congo and begin ministering among the Kimbaquist nation of Congo. It was in the midnight hour, beneath a mosquito net and the cry of the gorilla, when she was inspired to write her children's book, 'The Road to Nkamba.' This period of African missionary work was on the heels of a life transition and birthed the Grandma Leola series and corporation, dedicated to the lives, journeys, trials, and triumphs of women of all ages. An established and recognized author, Piper has published children's stories... her latest story, 'Simunye,' can be read in "Open Your Eyes: Extraordinary Experiences in Faraway Places.' Piper is also an awarded producer, writer, narrator, and director with award winning documentaries."

Piper currently resides in California and serves as a United Nations Delegate for the Commission of the Status of Women.
