From Pina:

I am a teacher. I've known since I was in 4th grade that I was going to be a teacher when I grew up. And for the past 8 years I have been a special educator doing just that. I have countless hilarious stories, seen miraculous change and growth, and have supported middle schoolers going through way more than just puberty. The relationships I've made with my students extends way outside of the classroom, and whenever a former student reaches out to me, I am reminded that this is my purpose.

Over the past couple of years I have also returned to being a student. I needed to learn how to heal. And yoga has taught me how.

I started my yoga journey back in my early twenties where I was mostly intimidated by all of the cool, twisty poses I figured I would never be able to do. I started taking classes on and off and although I enjoyed them and knew the benefits, I never fully committed until I moved to San Diego.

Depression has always been a real part of my life, whether I was dealing with it or not. I've had ups and downs--at times, feeling immense gratitude for my life, and at others, feeling like I was buried in a hole that I could never get out of. There was a time when I forgot what it felt like not to cry every day and didn't even know I was capable of telling my mind to shut the F up.

But yoga has taught me to be compassionate with myself. It has built my confidence, quieted the self-doubt, and brought me a sense of peace and openness for what comes into my life. It has inspired me to be stronger, physically and emotionally, to try new things, to believe in myself. A year ago, I would never have guessed I could trust in myself so much that I would start my own business: that people would actually want to buy my paintings, that I could actually spread reiki healing to others, and that I would bring mindfulness practices to kids at my school.

But just like a lot of things I couldn't have possibly predicted, I never thought that I would want to become a different kind of teacher...but I do.

I want to be a yoga teacher because I want to spread healing. I want to inspire others and I want to teach things that aren't taught in school: how to live with intense emotions, how to be mindful when the days are crazy, how to love yourself, how to stop and take a breath, how to persevere, how to be human.

I want to be a yoga teacher so I can continue to teach my kiddos as well as adults these important lessons. After seeing the difference that it is making in myself and others around me, it only makes me want to learn more-- so I can teach more, inspire more, and spread more love and light. And as we can see, the world needs it more than ever.

Thank you for reading my story. I appreciate all of your love and support in helping me continue this journey.
