Back in 2002, our family spent many months on the cancer unit at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. One of the days that our family had to be there was on Thanksgiving Day. We were, however, given a four hour pass to go spend time at our family's house to celebrate the holiday.
We were thankful for all of the people that worked that day, being away from their families and friends. We put together some of our Thanksgiving meal, turkey, stuffing and pies and brought it back to the hospital for nurses and doctors that were working that day.
That is how Pies & Smiles began. It brought a smile to many of the people working that day. Every Thanksgiving since then we have been delivering pies, coffee, and an Edible Fruit Arrangement, for both employees and families that have to be in the hospital on Thanksgiving. We also bring toys to help stock the toy chest on the cancer unit. The toy chest is full of toys that kids can choose from after having a procedure done to help as a distraction from the procedure.
We would appreciate any donation to help say thank you to the people working on Thanksgiving, helping kids and families get through the holiday, sharing pies, and putting smiles on kids’ faces with fun gifts. With all of your help, we were able to raise over $400 last year, and are looking forward to raising additional funds to continue to support those in the hospital.
