Peru's Medical Fund

Donation protected
Hi everyone,

This Incredible dog in the picture is "Peru". Peru came from a litter of several puppies that a  specialized training center in New York received to train as service dogs called Guiding Eyes for the Blind (GEB). GEB decided to name all of the puppies in the litter after a letter "P". My son's friend Eddie got "Peru"!

Peru is an extremely special service dog that was trained just for Eddie.   Eddie is DeafBlind so needless to say Peru is not only his invaluable companion, a forever friend; he is also Eddie's livelihood! Peru became very ill; and after a couple of days of the doctors watched him go downhill fast and after transferring him to three different critical care hospitals to find out what was wrong, they finally discovered that he was bleeding severely internally which would required several blood transfusions plus other treatments to try to stop the internal bleeding. (Update: Read a message from Eddie and Peru about what caused it.)

After several days in very critical condition, Peru finally started responding to the treatments with a total of five transfusions in the hospital (of which 4 days were in the critical care unit), he has finally recovered enough to go home, but the veterinarians say it will take no less than a month ( maybe 2 months) to fully recover. He will continue to be treated on an outpatient basis for now with daily medication and several more blood tests done to see how he's progressing until the they feel he's well enough to go back to work again being Eddie's DeafBlind Service dog.

Until then the medical bills will continue to accrue.  As of to date the Medical costs are close to $12,000 & with the special discounts for service dogs. This is the reason why I'm sending you an email. I would like to ask for the financial help of anyone who is able to give to help Eddie and Peru with these high medical bills as well as other expenses including a 2 nights  stay in a Hotel near the hospital (in order to stay close Incase anything  happens to Peru in ICU) since the Hospital was an hour away from their home.

We are forever grateful for the healthcare support that Peru received from the VCA SouthPaws  (ICU/Critical care) and his regular veterinary, Kingsbrook Animal Hospital . We are also grateful to the other veterinary clinics and hospitals that provided the support along the way for a total of five days (four days ICU and 1 day veterinary support).

I feel this is a very worthy cause for a very worthy, hard-working young man and his very smart and specially trained service dog, So if we are able to help him in ANY way we can to help ease the financial burden he faces, I know how eternally grateful Eddie will be to you all! Eddie is an Incredible young man and who has two BA Degrees.  He has a job that does not pay well enough to afford or be able to handle this huge financial situation.

Please consider donating what ever you can to help Eddie & his wonderful service dog Peru out.

Thank you All,

Video description and transcript:

Shot of Peru laying on the floor, then video pans up towards Eddie.

“Hello – hello – hello everyone! To my family – my friends – my dear friends and to all the people who know me and my dear precious guiding dog Peru. From the bottom of my heart – I am very grateful to have Peru because he has given me so much confidence in mobility as I navigate to different places with so much freedom and more self-confidence with the help of Peru’s guidance. With a heavy heart and deeply saddened by a very serious medical situation that came up with Peru. I pray and ask all my family, friends, people at Kingsbrook Animal Hospital (KAH) (primary vet), Southpaws Emergency Pet Center, Guiding Eyes for the Blind (GEB) and to everyone – please make a donation to support Peru and his recovery to become stronger once again and for many years to come with me. Thank you ALL for your support and I deeply care about you – I promise you – Peru is an outstanding guiding dog. God bless Peru and of course God bless you all to all my family, friends, veterinarians and their staff, to Guiding Eyes for the Blind and many more – thank you so much. I ask you all to please pray for Peru and to make a donation through GoFundMe. I love you all and thank you!”

Camera now pans back to Peru and Eddie kisses and hugs him as to comfort Peru while he is very sick.

The photo above was two and half years ago of Peru guiding Eddie along the riverwalk during their visit to Wichita, Kansas.

Hi! My name is Peru! I am a black Labrador Retriever – I am now 5 ½ years old. I was fully trained for a DeafBlind person from Guiding Eyes for the Blind . I worked with so many amazing people and my raiser there. Now, my special person is Eddie Martinez. I guide him every day – making sure he is safe.

Things I love:

- Belly rubs and plenty of them!
- Treats and more treats
- Taking a long walk at the parks
- Dipping in any water (the beach, lake, etc.)
- Giving plenty of kisses to Eddie

And of course I love to pick up anything that’s on the ground – I know I am not supposed to. Recently I picked up something really bad for me – a rodenticide that is anticoagulant at an unknown location. I almost died from bleeding internally and lost a lot of fluids. Thank goodness, I was quickly brought to different veterinary urgent care clinics to finally go to Southpaws Emergency Center  where they have the best resources to save my life.

Naturally, it is very expensive to treat me. My family and friends decided that I am so worth to live so that I can continue to work for Eddie and giving him freedom. But we need your help! The family does not have a lot of money nor have insurance to cover me.
Your support and donations are deeply appreciated beyond words. There are no profound words that show how grateful we are of your help. Thank you!

Peru was fighting for his life in this photo - the veterinarians were very alarmed and concerned at this point. His heart rate was high, foaming in his mouth, his eyes rolled a little, and he has collapsed to what the veterinarians said he was at close death.

In this photo, Eddie and Peru were resting on the floor at the veterinary hospital - at this point after 3 days Peru was responding to the treatment but at that point of this photo he had a 50% chance to live - but was slowing improving.

Eddie is kissing Peru's forehead at the veterinary hospital. It was during the early hours of the day that he was discharged. It was a happy day knowing that he will make it, but it would take at least a month to recover with continued veterinary treatments and appointments in addition to the hospital treatments.
