We are a success!!  We cannot keep up with the need for our services, so we are taking the next step and expanding our space.

We are a group of parents who will do anything to help our children who live with High Functioning Autism Disorder.  Anything to make their lives a little easier.  Anything to help them function in school.  Anything to set them up for success as adults.

We would like to introduce you to
The Penticton Centre for Exceptional Learning (Penticton EXCEL);
an alternative education option for high-functioning students with autism.

Our learning centre, Registered Charity Number 806687182RR0001, opened in September 2015.  Our certified Teacher has been creating individualized lesson plans based on the students' BC Ministry of Education Individual Education Plans (IEP's).  The lesson plans are then implemented in our sensory-sensitive facility by Behaviour Interventionists and Education Assistants.  The BC Ministry of Education curriculum is augmented by life skills, social skills, and executive-function skills: the skills that our children who live with High Functioning Autism Disorder truly need to be successful in the real world.

We have an ideal location in a quiet office building directly across from 21-acre Skaha Lake Park (a lakefront gem).  Our sensory-sensitive facility is currently equipped with four classrooms, a Sensory Room (a quiet space for self-regulation), a small gym, a small boardroom, a kitchen/lunch room, and an open learning space.  In order to keep up with our growing waitlist we have secured the unit next door and will be renovating the space to support our current and future students' needs.  We will construct four more classrooms, a conference room, a larger gym with a transversing climbing wall, a second Sensory Room,  a multi-purpose room, a computer lab, and a common area.

In keeping with our current space, each of our new classrooms will be home to three students and one Learning Coach (a Behaviour Interventionist or Special Education Assistant).  To ensure optimum comfort, student work stations will be personalized based on recommendations from our Occupational Therapist.  Fluorescant lights will be fitted with covers to reduce flicker, desks will be height-adjusted, and wiggle seats and fidgets will be the norm.

Our new space is currently unfinished and needs to be outfitted with walls, flooring, paint, doors, insulation, electrical and data ports, specialized lighting... and then needs to be furnished.  It is another giant undertaking, but one we feel is necessary in order to support the growing need in our community.

Thank you for your support as we support our local families who live with High Functioning Autism Disorder.

Sincerely,
The students, families, staff, and Board of Directors of
The Penticton Centre for Exceptional Learning.
