Help fix Peanut's broken heart

Donation protected
UPDATE: This campaign was never about asking the general public to fund this surgery.

The crowd funding platform was suggested as a tool to generate publicity and discussion of the research in order to attract a private/corporate sponsor for Peanut’s surgery.

Unfortunately that message got lost along the way and was not clearly communicated.

All payments have been refunded and the campaign ended.

Peanut’s Big Heart

Having a big heart isn’t a bad thing, metaphorically speaking. But when you’re a little dog and you literally have a big heart, that’s not good.

 Meet Peanut

Meet Peanut, a 10-year-old little rescue Chihuahua X Mini Foxie that was adopted almost 9 years ago. She was once a very nervous, apprehensive and scared girl but she eventually came out of her shell and now is the boss of the house!

Diagnosis & Prognosis

However this seemingly healthy and happy little girl has just been diagnosed with Mitral Valve Disease (in short, she has an enlarged heart and leaking heart valve). The only treatment option here in Australia is palliative, it’s not a cure – she must take heart medication every day for the rest of her life. The medication assists her quality of life but doesn’t fix anything. The next stage is Congestive Heart Failure which could occur next year or tomorrow. With this insidious disease there is no way of knowing when the heart will fail; but sadly most dogs die within 6-12 months of diagnosis.

 Life-saving Surgery

But there is hope. Veterinary surgeons in Japan have developed a life-saving procedure with an incredible 94% success rate. Dr Masami Uechi travelled to Australia last year to perform this surgery on a 10-year-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Prince (you can read the amazing story here ). He worked closely with University of Sydney School of Veterinary Science  specialists, including Dr Niek Beijerink (you might remember seeing him on The Project ).

Dr Uechi is coming back to Australia in April to perform more surgeries and to continue to share his knowledge with Australian surgeons. Peanut is a candidate for the surgery which will cost us $50,000 (the cost is so high because Dr Uechi must close his clinic in Japan and travel here with five of his surgical team).

Cost Breakdown

$25,000 for Dr Uechi’s surgery fee.

$5,000 for Dr Uechi and his surgical team's travel and accommodation costs (and this is assuming there are several dogs being treated during the visit).

$10,000 - $20,000 for pre-surgical evaluation and the very intense post-operative care at the University of Sydney  (depending on how smoothly the operation goes).

And please keep in mind, we pay a 7.5% fee on all donations.

Matters of the Heart

This isn’t just an opportunity to save  little Peanut’s life; it also assists specialists here to continue to learn more about this disease and surgical procedures so that for future generations of our fur babies this diagnosis doesn’t have to be a devastating death-sentence.

We truly appreciate any donation amount you can make. And if you can’t afford to donate, you can still help by sharing our campaign.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts x
