Paws for Rachel!

Donation protected
Rachel is funny, great with animals, volunteers with AARCS Puppy fostering, and is an avid Minecraft player. She loves baking and baking shows (especially ones with kids) and writing stories. She is 13 years old, and in grade 8 at Richard Fowler Junior High School.

Rachel was diagnosed last year with an Anxiety Disorder and with a Non-Verbal Learning Disability. This non-verbal learning disability is affecting her motor, social and visual-spatial development. In a nut shell, everything she sees is processed differently than most people. So things like interpreting social cues, communicating with peers, learning and applying concepts, and physical activities like writing or riding a bike are tough for her. Because of these difficulties and her anxiety disorder, she also experiences severe anxiety at school, low self-esteem and is often very alone. She feels sick to her stomach before going to school and tries to make herself as unnoticeable as possible. Not a fun place for a young girl to be in each day.

We’ve realized that Rachel is going to be dealing with these barriers for the rest of her life. She needs to have the right tools in her tool box going forward to be happy and successful. We are very lucky to have an awesome support team, but Rachel desperately needs a four legged friend to help her to see how much she has to offer. This friend would be a psychiatric service dog that specializes in anxiety.  She loves dogs and we’ve seen that she is a completely different person around her school's therapy dog. The change in her during those times spent is unbelievable!

• This type of service dog is very costly, approximately $25,000 and would need to be trained specifically to meet Rachel’s needs. Her dog would accompany her always, especially at school. There are only 2 Canadian organizations that provide these types of support dogs. We have chosen to partner with *MSAR in Winnipeg, through its founder, George Leonard.
• MSAR can provide a Psychiatric service dog for Rachel with no wait time and there is a trainer located in Edmonton that she can work with. However, because this is a non-government funded organization, we must pay for Rachel’s dog out of pocket.
So, we are looking for help from the community. We can’t change the world but we can change Rachel’s world both now and in the future. Follow her adventures at https://www.facebook.com/Paws4Rachel/
Perhaps there are local businesses that would help by becoming a sponsor? Please help, no donation is too small. If you are not able to donate, please help by sharing this.
We thank you, from the bottom of our hearts for taking the time to read this, donating and/or sharing.

*MSAR dogs have been featured on W5, Animal Planet, Ice Road Truckers, Canada Am, Good Morning America and every major media outlet.
