Robin Talbot married her college sweetheart, my cousin Joe Talbot, at the US Naval Academy Chapel in 1996. Only a few years later, Joe was diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer. He fought the disease with all his might but lost the battle, leaving Robin with two sweet little boys, Patrick (then 5) and Sean (then 2).
The family moved to Annapolis after Joe died. Like their dad, the boys have become great athletes, especially in baseball, and Robin is always on the sideline cheering them on. Prior to Joe's illness, Robin had left her corporate job for teaching so that she could spend more time with the boys, and she has since transitioned to a nonprofit organization.
As many of you now know, Patrick started his senior year at Annapolis High School and suddenly became ill; he was diagnosed with acute leukemia. Fortunately, he is being treated at Johns Hopkins Pediatric Hospital, but his intensive chemotherapy regimen is expected to continue for two more years.
Although his physicians are optimistic about Patrick's prognosis, and Robin has health insurance for the boys, there are significant uncovered expenses associated with his treatment. These include copays for hospital admission and medications, physician visits, travel, and time missed at work. As a single mom, in addition to juggling the usual day-to-day parenting of two teenagers, she is called upon to support her boys through this challenging time.
Robin and her boys have had more than their share of hardship, but they always manage to stay strong and find a smile. They are loved members of our community.
