Recently 11 of our ham radio operators contributed their radio equipment and time to support the volunteer aid and medic stations at the Bailey Hundo (2017 Bike Race).  We have also assisted with the Fairplay Burro Races.

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consist of licensed amateur radio operators who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment, with their local ARES leadership, for communication duty in the public service when disaster strikes.

1) We can operate without infrastructure, away from commercial power and vulnerable fixed antennas.

2) We can communicate with areas that may be difficult for other services to cover and we can adapt to situations on the ground quickly.

3) We can act as "remote sensors" or observers, a great example being what we do with the National Weather Service and the SKYWARN program.

4) We can operate independently from everyone else, so we don't tie up their communications system resources.

5) We can disseminate critical information to our neighbors and communities, and conversely, pass back to the EOC damage reports and requests for assistance.

6) We have a long history of experience in working with incident commands, EOCs, and NGOs.

7) We can take away some of the burdens of communications tasks from officials, administrators and professional radio operators who are busy with other things.

This project will result in providing redundancy and extending the reach and organization of Park County Emergency Services in the event of emergencies such as fires, floods, and other natural disasters.

One of ham radio's proudest traditions is public service. Right here in Park County the tradition continues, these communication resources are still available. Through out radio history, time after time in natural and man-made disasters when normal communications unavailable, hams are here to provide needed emergency communications to connect the impacted areas to the rest of the world, affecting rescue, medical relief and assurance to the general public.

State and Federal organizations utilize ham radio operators on both sides of the emergency. For example, the Red Cross has connections with hams as well as the National agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Besides normal voice communications, Digital methods that connect computers to radios to send reports and requests as well as digital television may also be employed.

The Park County Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) pronounced –(air ease) is now officially formed under a new and proactive and community oriented board of directors and staff. Under the State and National scheme, the Park County ARES may provide emergency radio communications for Park County and State in the event of a man made or natural disaster. The communications for the emergency services are utilized when the designed methods for agencies are not functional or satisfactory for the conditions or locations requireing communications.
