Croydon Shurgard Fire Destroyed Parent’s Business

Donation protected

Nearly two years ago my parents got the opportunity to take over a shop in our local area and started a sustainable antiques and furniture upcycling business, restoring and painting furniture and homewares, saving them from landfill and giving them another lease of life. They worked so hard to bring the decrepit and damp building to a decent standard, in order to make it safe for customers visiting, and so they could use the basement area to restore and paint the goods. It was hard work, and a real labor of love, but the Green Emporium (later Emporium 168) was born and continued for over a year and a half, at which point, unfortunately, in early December some major work needed to be done to the property (due to neglect) and the landlord expressed his need to double the rent at the rent review.
My parents were not able to meet his demands and so were forced to hand in their notice to vacate the property.
This was a blow for them, as they had just started focusing more on building an online presence and were selling items via etsy and other online platforms.
However, worse was to come.
Over the Christmas period, they started the process of moving the items in the shop to a self storage facility in Croydon, as the landlord had demanded some space be cleared for builders to progress with the work.
They managed to move 3 large van loads of furniture and other items from their shop, including the most valuable antiques, collectables, along with 13 bags of vintage clothes (that my mum has collected for years and sells online), and still had more items to move to self storage.
This morning the news reached us that Shurgard self storage in Croydon had burnt to the ground, taking my parent’s business stock and livelihood with it.
There is nothing left, the entire building has been obliterated, and nowhere now for my parents to move the rest of their items to, as that will mean paying out for another storage facility.

My dad suffer’s from early onset Parkinson’s, and my mum is his carer, so things are not easy living with his disability, but they have worked so hard to get this business up and running to just be hit with setback after setback. This latest chain of events has taken a huge financial toll on them- the costs of emptying out the shop, whilst still paying rent there, van hire and self storage costs alone have been a struggle for them.
And although they have storage insurance, I don’t know how long it will take for that to be sorted out, seeing as Shurgard have been near impossible to get hold of, and I doubt that it will cover all that they have lost in the fire, due to the nature of the goods (antiques, and antique furniture etc...)

They have tried to remain positive, even with having to give up the shop, as the online business was picking up speed and they were optimistic going into the new year, this has been devastating for them to lose all they had worked so hard for.
They are not the type of people to ever ask for help, but I wanted to do something to spread the word, so they can find some hope in the situation and continue on.
Any money raised will go towards paying for any additional storage costs and to help replace the stock that was destroyed in the fire.

The fire at Shurgard is tragic, and my heart goes out to everybody who lost possessions stored in there, any help that anyone can offer to ease the burden for Gemma & Steve, or help recoup some of their losses would be greatly appreciated in this difficult time.
Thank you, and please feel free to share.
