Rich Gately's gonna climb stairs!

Imagine having to give up having holidays with your family, even though you still live in the same area. Or watching your wife and children go to a party while you wait at home alone. For this family, this is rapidly becoming a reality. Rich has MS, which stands for multiple sclerosis. MS is a neurological disease that can effect any of the body's functions, and for every person it is different. For Rich, who has had MS over twenty years, he has lost the ability to walk. As time is going by, he is losing the ability to stand. What this means for him is a life confined to a wheelchair. He's accepted this. His wife has accepted this. His children know no other reality. What they struggle with is a future where he can no longer get into the homes of friends and family. No more Christmas eve at his mothers house. No more thanksgivings at his in-laws. No birthday parties with friends. It is a pretty isolating future.

There is a solution, though. An amazing piece of equipment called the Scalamobile is able to attach to a wheelchair and climb stairs. That's right, it climbs stairs! With this awesome device, people's homes that were not previously handicap accesible suddenly are open up to him and his family!

The problem is the hefty price tag. After spending thousands upon thousands of dollars on home renovations, power wheelchair and maintenance for work (because Rich still works 5 days a week, despite his disability), standard wheelchairs for places that the power chair is inconvenient, orthoti braces for his legs, a wheelchair van to get him to work... The list of expenses for a lifelong disability is endless. Unfortunately, Rich and his family cannot bear the expense of this piece of equipment that will reclaim some dignity and family and friends that every person deserves.
