On January 16, 2020 my father, Peter Lampkins, passed away unexpectedly in Lagos, Nigeria. He was 52 years old.
Throughout his life, my dad lived and worked in the United States, Turkey, Thailand, Liberia, Somalia, Italy, France, Germany, Morocco, the Dominican Republic, and Nigeria. He was loved and respected by friends and colleagues (literally) all over the world.
My dad is survived by my mother, two younger sisters, and myself. My mom, Leyla, has been his partner for 35 years. Together, they built an incredible life full of love and adventure for themselves and our family. My two younger sisters are 14 and 18 years old; one is a 9th-grader in Lagos and the other is a freshman at San Diego State University.
I had the immense privilege of having my father in my life for 23 years. From a young age, he instilled in me the importance of reading voraciously, writing concisely, and reading my essays out loud before submitting them. He showed me what it means to be fiercely loyal, dependable, and compassionate.
In this time of immense grief and heartbreak, I am setting up this fund for anyone who would like to make a financial contribution to our family. There is no amount too small or unappreciated.
This fund will be managed by myself, Luul Lampkins. I will be using these proceeds to open a savings account, which will be put toward my sisters' college fees. My dad has been emphasizing the importance of education for as long as I can remember. I can think of no better way to honor him than by ensuring that my sisters are afforded this opportunity.
