OneVoice Yth Choir & Mentoring Trip

"We must seize the opportunity of a lifetime in the lifetime of the opportunity!"

This quote by Evangelist Leonard Ravenhill offers a sobering reality as it relates to the limited amount of time we have to positively impact the lives of our young people!  When that impact relies on the generosity of strangers, the scope of the opportunity seems to narrow...BUT YOU CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE!

Think about this...
Have you ever wanted something  so badly...but the only thing between you and that experience was the money to make it happen?  If we're honest, the answer to that question for most of us is "Yes," which means that you can relate to these children.

They are the "OneVoice: 2nd Generation" Community Youth Choir (OV2).  Throughout each year, these young people--ages 12-18 years--work diligently to raise the money needed to participate in several enriching opportunities designed to build character, self-confidence, and social awareness through both vocal performance and community service.   The kids and their families often describe  these activities as “opportunities of a lifetime"  because without the generosity of supporters like YOU, most of them could not afford these experiences.

Many of our activities and events involve exposure to audiences beyond the local community, even travel to other states.  One of the most ambitious of these opportunities is planned for this Summer.  In partnership with our sister organization, 2nd Wind Mentoring (2W), OV2 Staff & Volunteers have devised a 7-day "educational excursion"  (July 12-14 and August 2-5, 2017) entitled "DreamWork 2017!"  Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s world-renowned “I Have a Dream” speech, this journey will provide an up-close encounter with people, places, and events from a defining time in our nation's history...the Civil Rights Movement.

BUT THERE'S A TWIST...
OV2 Members have been challenged to examine an uncommon, and often overlooked perspective of the Movement: RACIAL UNITY!

To prepare for the challenge, every member--without exception--must complete a mandatory program of study entitled“The Dream: Then and Now!"   Written by OV2 and 2W Founder & Director Dr. Trish Hodge-Washington, D. Min., this curriculum explores many aspects of the Civil Rights Movement: from the history preceding the call-to-action to the countless unsung heroes of varying racial, religious, and socio-economic distinctions who worked alongside the most commonly held heroes of the Movement.  Ultimately, the objective is to uniquely connect today's youth to the Civil Rights Movement through a clear understanding that it was undergirded by a Spirit of Unity among the most unlikely allies of that time: Blacks and Whites!  Dr. Trish  says it is an invaluable lesson for ALL, as she declares:
"Clearly, it was the prevailing Spirit of Racial Unity that soared beyond the conventions of the day to not only
compelled a nation to take notice, but also propelled the Movement onto the 'world stage' as a universal struggle for HUMAN Rights! Only Unity could do that! "

As the "DreamWork" curriculum connects OV2 Members and 2nd Wind Mentees to portraits of uncompromising fortitude and personal sacrifice, the excursion will literally bring it to life.  On this journey, our young people will visit several historical sites and museums, including:
   *Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (Birmingham, AL);
   *The King Center (Atlanta, GA);
   *Gullah Geechee Island (off the coast of Savannah, GA)
   *National African-American Museum of History & Culture at the Smithsonian (Washington DC).
   ...and several stops along the way!

As previously stated, all of our activities, events, and programs are supported primarily through fundraisers driven by the creativity and hard work of our young people... this trip is no exception! However, the success of such a large-scale undertaking also needs YOUR support!

Your donations will help finance every aspect of this journey, including:
   *Charter Bus Transportation
   *Hotel lodging
   *Meals (3 daily meals per person & snacks)
   *Admission Fees  to museums, historical sites, etc.

The entire experience, from the curriculum to the excursion itself, promises a heightened sense of responsibility for their individual and collective power to make positive changes in our world!
Likewise, our ultimate hope is that the members of OV2 will experience life-changing awareness that will inspire lifelong achievement!

The impact of the DreamWork 2017 Educational Excursion on the hearts and minds of our kids cannot be overstated nor underestimated!  In the words of our OV2 and 2nd Wind Members and their families, this is "an opportunity of a lifetime"...and none of them should miss it because of a lack of finances!

As previously mentioned, we--the OV2 Staff & Volunteers--are reminded that this is literally an "opportunity of a life time" for us as well. We have a brief window of time to realize our Mission:  To build mature character, self-confidence, and social awareness in our children!  With that in mind, we must heed the instruction of a famous Evangelist Ravenhill to seize this opportunity of a lifetime within the lifetime of the opportunity!

The personal benefit to our members is unmistakable; however, the benefit to the community at large will be equally as profound as these young people find their VOICE and live up to their potential to build a better world!
