My name is Kay and my fiance's name is Shane, we have been together for 3 years and are soon to be married in May 2019. For the past 2 years we have been trying to have a child, but in December 2017 and October 2018 I had a miscarriage, the heartbreak that I felt sent me into a depression. I was determined to seek answers, I refused to let depression win. After many visits, tests, doctors and specialists; I was told that it would be extremely difficult for me to become pregnant naturally, and if I did I would have an 85% chance of miscarrying again. I felt as though my hope was snatched right from underneath me. I am currently in the process of finding out what my options are whether it is IVF ($12,000 minimum), A surrogate($25,000-$30,000 minimum) or adoption.
1 in 8 couples in the US struggle with infertility. I didn't understand the deep sadness and loneliness, the self disappointment and grief that I would feel. I didn't realize infertility would rob me of the joy of celebrating pregnancies and milestones with friends and their children, because while I was happy for them, in the back of my mind every celebration was a painful reminder that I could not share fully in that joy. I didn't realize the stress and anxiety it would cause, leading me to feel as if it is somehow my fault. I never thought financial constraints would come into the discussion about having a family.
