Otis' vet bills

Donation protected
Otis is a 15 month old kitty with cerebellar hypoplasia who loves to play with his brothers, eat a lot, and cry for your attention. My mum adopted him from across the country at the beginning of this year, and he has lit up our world even more than it already was.

Here is Otis' story:

Otis had to go to the vet in the morning on November 26 for an emergency visit. We noticed the night before that he was having trouble peeing. My mum instantly knew that he was most likely blocked with crystals, but we were hoping that he would be able to get the crystals out on his own - not the case. While at the vet, they confirmed that Mr. Otis was indeed blocked with crystals. Luckily we caught it early, but he still required the blockage to be removed and a catheter put in for a couple days. This would ensure that the blockage would be gone.

They, fortunately, did remove the blockage, and thankfully he did not have any blood in his urine and no infection. And he was able to come home the next day. The vet bill for this one visit was a grand total of $1085.95.

On November 29, Otis had to go back to the vet. My mum that morning noticed that Otis was starting to block again. At the vet's, they were able to express him and a long stream of crystals came out. They decided that it was best that Otis be hospitalized for the next three days with a catheter inserted to ensure that he did not block again. We were finally able to bring Mr. Otis home on December 1. He was so happy to be home and back in his favourite spot (his bed that looks out the sliding door). But, unfortunately, this visit also concluded with a substantial bill - almost $2000.00.

We thought things would be better for him after two visits in less than a week, but again he got blocked, and had to go back to the hospital on December 3. The plan is for him to stay another 2 or 3 nights. If you have lost count, this is now the third time that he has been blocked in a week!

The vets at the hospital tried to give him an IV and Valium to see if that would relax Otis enough to pass the blockage, but that did not work. My mum has decided to have the vets insert the catheter and she will probably schedule a PU surgery (widening of the urethra), but that surgery will cost somewhere in the ballpark of $3000.00. This last (and hopefully final visit) will cost an additional $1000.00 on top of the surgery cost.

There is the option to just have him catheterized and have him home with us after two to three days and hope he doesn't get blocked again, but it's already been three times in one week! So it's highly unlikely not to happen again. The PU surgery seems to be the recommended way, but of course an expensive way.

I am writing this on behalf my mother to help her out. We need to get this surgery done as soon as possible. We can't have poor Mr. Otis blocking up again from those nasty crystals. If you could help in any way possible, it would be greatly appreciated!
