We need your help!

Enable 15 talented Visual Artists and Musicians to meet for a 10 day intensive workshop in Gois, Portugal, focusing on cross-arts collaboration

This summer, August 1-12th, 2018!

Summary

Other Lands Other Sounds 2018 is an intensive residential workshop in Gois Portugal for 15 artists from around the world who have never met before - specifically in order to learn how to collaborate and work in creative teams.

This is an incredibly valuable opportunity for our artists and will result not only in new works combining sound and image, but will also have profound effects on the artists’ practices and their approaches to collaboration.

It costs about 1000EUR + (including travel) to participate in this workshop. For some artists, an extra 200EUR will make all the difference between being able to join or not! Donating as little as 15EUR or more towards their expenses will make a big difference!

We have a range of ways to thank you for your support. Take a look below to learn more about the project and our artists.

THANK YOU!

Kate Smith, Organizer of Other Lands Other Sounds 2018

P.S. Our costs are in Euros, but you can donate even if you come from a non-Euros country. Check to see if your bank or credit card will charge you an exchange fee.

What is Other Lands Other Sounds 2018?

Other Lands Other Sounds 2018 is similar to a residency, in that our artists will focus intensively on experimenting and creating new works of art in a beautiful, remote setting.

However, we're different in an important way. We are bringing together 15 artists from around the world, who have never met before, to develop their practices through collaboration. To help facilitate that delicate process, we have an amazing leadership team that will provide the kind of support and facilitation that you rarely get on an individual residency.

Our team will guide creative group workshops, lead movement sessions, provide individual mentoring and one-to-one tutoring, and curate the final works. This extra support and tuition makes Other Lands Other Sounds 2018 more like a course or workshop.

Of course, there will be opportunities to enjoy the beautiful scenery of rural Portugal, but the program is going to be packed!

The cost to join Other Lands Other Sounds 2018 is 800EUR, which covers room and board, food, studio space, equipment, and tuition. We have artists coming from as close as Spain, and as far as South Africa, so travel costs can range from 200EUR - 500EUR. That’s why every donation helps to make a difference.

Why should you support these artists to attend?

Residencies provide an invaluable opportunity to step away from the demands and rhythms of everyday life, and enter a held space for process, inquiry, and reflection. Being outside of your normal context and around new people creates necessary distance, allowing for new perspectives and ideas to arise. Without the pressure for performance or product, artists can relax into taking creative risks, trying something new, and learning from failure

Each artist in this summer’s cohort has been specially selected for their demonstrated dedication to their craft, a high level of skill, and a strong interest in learning through collaboration. They have each spent years honing their craft, and are now eager to exit their comfort zone and to be challenged to rethink their practice.

Our artists hail from around the world, including Pakistan, South Africa, the UK, Turkey, France, Portugal, the US and more. This is an incredible opportunity for these individuals to learn not only from each other’s practices, but also to learn from each others' cultures.

Other Lands Other Sounds 2018 could play an important role in taking our artists’ practices to the next level, to kick-starting new collaborations, and introducing them to new ways of working.

"Great space to explore music making and new ways and processes for music collaboration. Perfect balance between lead workshops and self/group generated ideas and work. Very well supported and encouraged by Filipe, Kate, Rodrigo and the rest of team. Opportunity to grow artistically and make music with new people in new places."

Visual Artists

Marie-Pierre Cravedi (France) - photographer

Thanks to ephemeral sculptures, interventions on the image and absurd situations, my photographic work aims at making the viewer think about his relationship with reality. Photography, thanks to the two-dimensional representation, allows me to blur the viewer’s perception. Memory, family, loneliness and connection with nature are themes I am really interested in.

Sonya Rademeyer (South Africa) - visual artist

I view my body as a transducer when drawing sounds through automated gesture. I am also very interested in deep-listening as a form of empathy. Directly connected to having been an ICU nurse for many years, embodied empathy enables me to continuously capture miniscule details and to read beyond the obvious visible surface. In exploring the traces of sound and movement in my work, I move beyond the surface area as I allow my body to become the transducer of my experience. I view the automatic, gestural output of my work as a direct reflection of the embodied simulation of empathy taking place.

Andrei Argaetic (Romania) - visual artist

Born in Bucharest, Andrei various techniques (painting, sculpture, modeling, graphics, etc..) at the Faculty of Arts of Bucharest, Department of Pedagogy of Art, under Dr. Professor Silvia Stoica. His artworks have the repetitive subject of a tree. The tree is a symbol of life, with a cyclical cosmic evolution: death and regeneration. "I have started working monochrome, in black (ink, liners, markers etc.) on wood, and I enjoy this technique very much. What I really appreciate is the naturalness of the wood, that brings warm feelings to the viewer."

Sophie Reeves (England) - filmmaker

I am an emerging director, designer, filmmaker and live performance art deviser. I come from a fine art/photography background, and have began to explore performance design and practice over the last two years. My main focus is on non spoken word (mainly dance and music performances) and I like to experiment with a combination of different practices to create something completely new.

Unaiza Ismail (Pakistan/UAE) - visual artist

I am a young imaginative and creative visual artist with experience in drawing, illustration, printmaking, sculpture and basic ceramic technique. My hobbies focus on aesthetics and their impact on society and need to inject this energy and flow of ideas where I can contribute my skills.

UAE based artist and researcher in visual culture, Unaiza Ismail completed her Masters in Visual arts in 2017 (with Honors) from National college of Arts, Lahore, Pakistan. In 2013, she acquired her Bachelor’s degree in Fine arts (with Honors) from University of Sharjah, UAE. She has worked for numerous art fairs, including the renowned Art Dubai, Sikkah, Sharjah Biennale. She has also delivered few art workshops at SAF summer school and Sharjah girl’s guide as an art instructor.

Anna Grenman (Finland) - filmmaker

I’m a visual artist and a performer, primarily working with the medium of film and video. My work mostly investigates ritual practice and mythology, and is collaborative in nature - I usually work with a small team of performers and sound artists. I often shoot and edit for my own productions, but also work as a cinematographer for others. My work mostly consists of experimental shorts, dance films, music videos and drawings, and I have some experience in filming for narrative cinema and documentary. I’m currently researching and producing work around embodied linguistics and performance of language, and studying for an MA in Moving Image at the Royal College of Art. I previously specialised in animation and cinematography, with a BA in Animation from 2011, and an MA in Cinematography from 2013.

Musicians

Amber Agha (England) - poet

I am a London based poet, sound artist and spoken word artist. I have been writing poetry since I was 5 and have been published in various magazines and journals. My last 2 anthologies were self published and are available on Amazon and iTunes. My poem films have showcased galleries and film festivals around the world. And my sound installations combine spoken word with shamanic song, chanting, over-toning and the drum and rattle. I fuse my own deeply personal stories with the esoteric and other worldly and like to draw on my own spiritual background in reiki and shamanism to fuse these worlds in new and exciting ways, for me anyway!

Berfin Aksu (Turkey) - violin

I am a 20 year old musician that loves spontaneity and people. I love contributing with the voice I have in all platforms of art. I have been playing the violin since age of 7. For a very long time I think I didn't realise how much I liked all art forms and how little I knew about them. Since coming to Guildhall, I have been taught a certain European style for playing classical music, and had many experiences on stage since my early ages. However, that felt a little narrow to me, and to what I believe I can give and want to give. Besides classical music, my other passion is to paint with my funky abstract style, take photos, and write. With photography I like upside down scenery, especially during sunsets.

Jason Gong (United States) - piano/cello

I’m currently finishing up my MPerf degree (expected 2018) as part of the Guildhall Artist programme in piano performance under Professors Noriko Ogawa and Paul Roberts. I received my BM in Piano Performance in 2016 from the University of Michigan under Louis Nagel. In addition to piano, I play quite a bit of cello as well, and I am a teacher and performer at the CellochanWoods summer course.

Chloe Lam (Hong Kong) - voice

Born in Hong Kong, Chloe is a final year postgraduate singer studying at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London with a specialism in Historical Performance, while still having an immense interest in contemporary and collaborative performance. She likes to reconnect the space and audience through performance and the musicality of the body. She usually works around a conceptual idea or a message but leaves space for audience to have their own interpretations. She believes that every project and collaboration is a long-term commitment that we can always go back in time and further develop an earlier work. Her performances are always a work from scratch, then evolve through a continuous cycle of discussion, research, workshop and experimentation.

Bozhana Karadalieva (Bulgaria) - piano

I am currently on the Piano Accompaniment (PACC) course in Guildhall, having previously graduated from the Solo Piano BMus also at the Guildhall. The reason I've decided to change my course is collaboration. I enjoy working in a group with other people, share ideas and experiment. My other interests are varied styles of dance, theatre and yoga.

Josh Geffin (England) - guitar

Josh Geffin is a London-based singer-songwriter and guitarist working in performance, TV and education. He has performed at Southbank Centre, Nest Collective, and on BBC6 Music and his music has been licensed for use in television, appearing on Channel 4, ITV and Sky. His latest EP, Rocks Of Bawn, is a contemporary take on traditional folk songs influenced by working as Audio Editor with The Song Collectors Collective, run by Sam Lee. In 2016, he played the role of Troubadour in the major exhibition Ragnar Kjartansson at the Barbican Art Gallery (read Josh’s blog about it here ). He has collaborated with many fine musicians including Quinta, Andy Hamill, Nathaniel Keen, Victoria Hume, Amiina, Benjamim and Sonny Johns. Josh is a Kodialy-trained teacher working with DaCapo Music Foundation and in schools. He graduated from Dartington College of Arts in 2005 with a First Class BA Honours in Music.

Tamsin Elliott (England) - multi-instrumentalist

I'm a multi-instrumentalist, composer and teacher based in Bristol, UK. I play flute, whistles, Celtic harp and piano accordion. My roots are in the folk music of the British Isles, but my interests and playing styles extend to the musics of Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East as well as Western Classical and Jazz to varying degrees. I currently play in original folk-world fusion project Solana, a trad folk duo with guitarist/concertina player Sid Goldsmith, and a trio playing Eastern European music on accordion, violin and clarinet. I also perform solo as a harpist, and have recently collaborated with oud players and percussionists in Cairo, Egypt.

Natalie Higgins (England) - voice

I am a student at Central Saint Martins, Performance design and practice 3rd BA. My work is predominantly about the cross-disciplinary between music and design, I am a professional Jazz, soul and folk singer going under the name Natalie Wildgoose and am also in an experimental jazz and soul band called NOVA who gig all around London. In addition to this, I love to design and make costume and sets, and I have been writing my dissertation on the possibilities of making music and design one indivisible form of artwork. http://cargocollective.com/Natalielouise

Portuguese Musician Bursary

We would love to be able to offer a spot on Other Lands Other Sounds to a local Portuguese musician! Our costs make it prohibitive for most Portuguese to attend, so we are hoping to raise enough money to make it possible -- we have several people in mind who would be deserving of such an opportunity and an incredible addition to the team. Help us make it a possibility!
