Imagine a life where your childhood was cut short...
A life where you were responsible for making your own way in the world before your 13th birthday...
Imagine a life with nothing but the clothes on your back and nowhere to call home.
This is the reality for a growing number of poor Moroccan children. Some were abandoned by their parents. Others are fleeing unstable and abusive situations at home. Others yet, were abandoned at birth while they struggled to breathe.
Compounding these traumatic situations, most of these children have never had proper health care and many have had no health care at all. Simple check-ups and basic care can prevent small problems from becoming lifelong disabilities. Yet, even for those lucky enough to grow up in an orphanage, basic health care services are often not available.
Now imagine that for a moment, feeling lucky to grow up in an orphanage…
Is that life as unimaginable to you as it is to us?
During our April 2018 mission, we treated over 223 children. One of the resilient kids we met was a 2 year old boy named Anouar. He was thought to be totally deaf by the care team at his orphanage. His inability to hear slowed his childhood development and severely limited his ability to speak.
We gave him a basic hearing screening and felt there was more to the story. Our ear, nose & throat specialist took a look inside his ears and saw a level of wax build-up he had never experienced in such a young child. After thoroughly cleaning out his ear canal we gave him another hearing screening and found he could hear normally in his right ear. We left medical supplies and trained the local medical staff on the proper treatment and follow-up procedures for Anouar after we left.
Please help us continue to provide these valuable medical services to such an under-served population.

We have kept in touch with the orphanage and recently learned that because of our medical treatment and the continued follow-up, Anouar is doing great; learning to speak and progressing normally through his early childhood development milestones.
Had he not received this treatment from us it could have been years or longer, if at all, before anyone realized such a simple corrective procedure with some additional basic treatments and follow-up could have given him a much more normal life.
It’s stories like Anouar’s and many other beautiful children who inspire and motivate us to keep coming back. Being a non-profit means we rely on donations from compassionate people like you to keep making a difference for children like Anouar.
Can you help our growing team of volunteers and medical professionals provide much needed health care services to orphans in Morocco?
HMEMSA’s mission is to support the exchange of expertise between American and Moroccan professional. One way we do this is through these annual Health Missions to orphanages in Morocco.
We are now planning our 3rd medical mission for April 24th – 29th, 2019. During this mission we will be visiting 2 orphanages (Le Nid and Annex of Rita Zniber Foundation) in Meknes, Morocco. While we are there we will be providing children with dental, vision, hearing, and other specialty medical services. Our volunteer doctor team currently consists of pediatric dentists, gastroenterologists, and a pediatrician; and we are still seeking additional specialists.
In line with our organizational mission, a huge focus for HMEMSA is ensuring that there is continued medical care after our American medical team of volunteers goes home.
To facilitate this we focus on two things. First, HMEMSA along with our volunteers graciously donate a variety of medical equipment and supplies to ensure the required resources are locally available after the mission is complete. Second, we spend time educating the orphanage staff along with local medical providers about ways to easily treat and prevent many of the health conditions that were encountered.
