Buy Beds for an Orphanage in India

$2,877 of $4,000 goal

Raised by 53 people in 23 months
As some of you know, I have been supporting a couple of girls at an orphanage in India.  This orphanage is a haven for street girls, young girls who are literally living in the streets and scrounging in garbage cans for food and for recyclables that they may be able to sell.  It is impossible to describe the squalor and danger of this life.  The outlook for these girls is pretty bleak -- begging, prostitution, horrible abuse, and an early death.  For a lucky few, some compassionate police officer brings them to the Jeevadhanam orphanage.  Here, they are fed, housed, clothed, and given an education.

What started as an effort to buy the girls a computer to share has expanded into a larger project.  At present, the girls sleep on mats on the floor -- an improvement over the streets, but the orphanage would like to purchase twenty-five sturdy bunk beds for the girls.

All money goes directly to the orphanage -- there are no middle-men and no bureaucracies to support.  I have a friend in India who gets receipts and sends them to me.  Many people have expressed a desire to donate directly to a worthy group but don't have the connections or the ability to make large donations.  This is your chance.  If we each chip in twenty or thirty bucks -- for most of us, the amount we spend on coffee each week! -- we can make an incredible difference in the lives of these girls.  More, of course, is even better!!

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will provide whatever information you would like.  And please share with whomever you think might be interested.

At the end of this month, I will be withdrawing the money raised and sending it to my friend in India, where she will supervise they buying of beds for these girls. Operating on a shoestring budget with almost no administrative costs, this orphanage feeds, clothes, houses, and educates (even post-secondary!) girls who are found rummaging through garbage in order to survive. The girls sleep on floor mats because there is not enough money left over for actual beds. Please consider a donation toward buying beds for these girls. At the end of the month, I will send what I have to help as much as possible.

One more reminder for those who, like me, always mean to make donations, but . . . Also, a great little donation project for groups you might belong to: Rotary, Soroptimists, Church groups, . . .

So . . . the campaign to get these girls some simple beds seems to be stalled at around $1500. If you have been meaning to contribute -- but, like me, put these things off until they drop off my feed and I forget about them -- please consider a donation now. And if you can't donate, how about a "share" to spread the word. The money WILL go directly to the girls, even if the goal must be less ambitious. But a simple bed for each girl would still be a worthy goal to aim for. Thank you for everyone who has already donated to the fund.
