The Andrew Blais Orphanage Home is located in Motsekuoa, Lesotho and currently houses 50 children ranging in age from 4-21 years old. Each of our children are assigned to us by the Lesotho Department of Social Development, and all are classified as either a single orphan, double orphan, or vulnerable child.
Lesotho is a developing country with one of the highest HIV/AIDS rates in the world—with 25% of the population infected. As a result, there is an incredible number of orphaned and vulnerable children here. Caring for such a high number of children proves to be incredibly difficult in this impoverished nation—especially in trying to feed them. Each day we wake up, we aren’t sure if there will be water, or electricity, or food.
These children are dreamers. They are smart, kind, and hardworking. They are artists who make mini sculptures out of dirt and water. They are poets in their own language AND English. They want to be doctors, engineers, teachers, and nurses. They are compassionate. They are funny and lighthearted. They know that they are better than their current situation and we strive each day to remind them of their worth and just how much they are loved. But the reality is, life and excellence are not possible without food.
$10,000 can sound like a lot, but let's break this down...
its only 192.30 per week, or 27.40 a day to feed 50 children. According to USA today the average american family of four spends on 300$ a week on groceries alone.
If we break this down further…a donation of 200$ will feed one child for the entire year, which means that a donation of just $3.85 feeds one child for an entire week. $3.85 pays for 21 meals.
