Organ Donor to Tough Mudder for Kidney Research

In the UK there is roughly 6000 people waiting for some form of organ donation, whether it be kidney, heart, lungs or liver lobe. The vast majority of these people, some 5000, are waiting on a kidney transplant, either from a living or deceased donor. Donating an organ is something nobody can ask you to do - it’s completely your choice! I understand that it’s not something most would ever think about. I probably wouldn’t have had it not been for the personal circumstances of my donation.  If becoming an organ donor is something you may be interested in doing, you can get more information on the following link:

I donated a kidney to a close relative in February of this year. A transplanted kidney in ideal circumstances is quoted to be able to increase both life span and quality for roughly 10-15 years, dependant on other factors.  After some complications, my donated kidney was  rejected and had to be removed from the recipient. The harsh reality is that not every organ transplant will be a success, as we found in our experience.

As a result of this, I’m looking to raise funds in support of Kidney Research UK through participating in a ‘Tough Mudder’ event ,  16 and a half weeks after my own kidney donation. For those that don’t know,’ Tough Mudder’ is a 10 mile obstacle course through fields and mud, where everyone is reliant upon each other to see it through – be it mental or physical support. Psychologically I know it will be harder than I done last September.  I’ll be looking for my two friends (in the picture behind me) for support throughout it. The whole thing won’t be a sprint; there will be times I’ll have to take breaks and walk. This I’ve accepted already, but the goal is for us to see it through together, start to finish.

Doing ‘Tough Mudder’, I’m looking at fundraising for Kidney Research UK. Any money raised will help contribute to research into improving treatments for those with kidney diseases and hopefully enhance their quality of life.
