Oregon Fisherman , Josh Porter Memorial Fund

$15,150 of $15,000 goal

Raised by 230 people in 2 months
The Mary B 2 crab boat capsized about 10pm Tuesday Jan 8, 2019 while crossing the Yaquina Bay Bar Newport Oregon. Three fisherman died in he accident including my brother-in-law, Josh Porter, age 50. He is survived by his wife, Denise Barrett-Porter   Josh was the sole financial supporter for himself and denise and tirelessly (and happily) worked difficult jobs as a fisherman and logger in the off-season. He was a 12 year recovering addict and champion of Narcotics Anonymous, traveling to attend conferences and mentoring countless people in recovery.
We are starting this campaign to help offset the expenses associated with funeral arrangements and any additional financial needs for his wife, Denise. The outpouring of love and support has been immeasurable and we want to thank you for your generosity as we struggle to find a way to move forward with such a tragic loss.

GoFundMe would like us to specifically touch on these points for the campaign:

1. Who are we? James Barrett and Helen Parsons.

2. Where we are from? Spokane, Washington

3.What is your relationship to the parties you’re raising money for? I, James’s Barrett, am the brother of Denise Barrett-Porter who is the wife of the deceased, Josh Porter (my brother-in-law). Helen Parsons is my significant other.

4.How will the funds be specifically used? Funerals are expensive, as we all know.
to pay outstanding accumulated debts, offset any and all costs associated with cremation services and ceremonies. Josh was the sole supporter for himself and Denise and she  will need a cushion of funds to create a new life in the absence of her soul mate.

5.How will we plan to send the funds to the parties upon withdrawal? A small portion of the donations will be used to provide funds for various travel expenses via Visa Gift Cards (at the request of Denise) and the remaining larger portion will be transferred to a personal savings account in her name.

Over the last few days we have been at a loss for words. Each note is hard to write, each phone call, each email....even in conversations with each other. Words don’t seem to be enough to express our heartache for losing Josh and his fellow fisherman, not enough to comfort Denise and Josh’s loving family, not enough to express our gratitude to each person who has reached out to us in this somber time of need . We just keep focusing on the good around us, the good that Josh’s light brought into this world, all the good that will last because of him.
This early afternoon Josh’s GoFundMe Memorial campaign hit the 11k mark. Each dollar has been given from the heart. As we pause to read your comments and messages aloud to each other it reminds us of why we’re here, why each of our lives matter and to make it truly count, to be a blessing and a messenger of hope to our fellow man. Thank you for sharing with us your memories (and tears). We are all connected in our sorrow and our admiration for such an exceptional man.
Our new goal is 15k. If it’s in your heart to share this campaign link among your friends and family, we would be so very grateful in your help getting the word out. We promise to keep you updated along the way.

We have surpassed the halfway point of our stretch goal of $10k, reaching 8k by 3pm today. The day isn’t over and certainly there is so much more work to do in the coming weeks. We appreciate all the heartfelt messages and stories of how Josh and Denise has touched your lives. We have also had an incredible amount kind strangers who have dedicated their donation in the name of a loved one lost, in honor of those in recovery and in the commercial fishing industry. As articles circulate locally and internationally touching on different points with this tragedy, we want to thank the Coast Guard for for all of their hard work, being on the front lines, risking their own lives to protect these fishermen.
We welcome you to share this GoFundMe link and help us pass the word on how friends can support our efforts. Onward ♥️
