D.C. #OrangeVest Action and Rally

Art supporting refugees' rights needs your help!  The time for for the last #OrangeVest performance has arrived.

What the #Orangevest action is?
The #OrangeVest performance is a public intervention about the refugee crisis in Europe. The visual language of the piece refers to the refugees’ trip from Turkey to Greece. As part of the action, a group of people wear black clothes and orange life vests. They walk in public in order to raise awareness about the antagonism that the refugees are facing on the other side of the world.
The performance is based on the usage of public spaces in the city and attempts to create an aesthetic balance between a protest and work of art.  The performers don't disturb everyday public routines. The participants are simply present and quiet. They speak to the people around them only if they are questioned about the nature of the performance. The piece is not intended to force the viewer to interact or to take a position. Rather it is to encourage the audience to seek out information about the refugee crisis.

Part of the #OrangeVest crew includes one person documenting the performance as well as a spokesperson who gives out the #OrangeVest stickers and provides the public with information about the performance subject matter.

Who is the artist?

My name is Georgia Lale . I'm a Greek visual artist that lives in New York City. Last October, I started a series of public visual performances in order to raise awareness about the European refugee crisis. My grandfather was a refugee from Turkey and he crossed the Aegean Sea at the age of five, following the same route with many of the current refugees from Syria.

The #OrangeVest in Washington DC as part of the DCrally4refugees.

We are organizing an #OrangeVest performance that will take place during the DCrally4refugees  on August 28, 2016.

DCRally4Refugees was inspired by Americans who traveled to Greece and volunteered directly with refugees fleeing war and violence in Syria and other countries. After bearing witness to the suffering of millions and hearing the voices of fear and intolerance at home; they felt compelled to do everything possible to raise awareness, stand up against the voices of intolerance, and show the world that America cares about the greatest refugee crises since World War II.

DCRally4Refugees stands for the right of all people to live in safety, dignity, and peace.

As borders have closed to those fleeing war and violence, the voices of fear and intolerance have grown louder and leaders are failing in their responsibilities to uphold international obligations, we will not let politics or fear stand in the way of our compassion. We urge the United States Government to do more to fulfill its legal and moral obligations toward refugees and further assist the countries which are carrying the heaviest burden of the ongoing crisis. We believe that every act of rejection is an affront to humanity and every act of compassion a reminder of what is best in each and every one of us.

The #OrangeVest performance:

A group of 30 volunteers will walk around the National Mall and spread the word about the refugees' struggles.
We all need to get together and raise our voices against xenophobia and racism. If you wish to participate please contact me here .
