Once Upon A TukTuk

Donation protected
Hello!

For those that don't know us personally, we are Calvin and Laura, a well-traveled couple from Calgary whose thirst for adventure is insatiable. Our combined passions include travel, writing, photography, mountaineering, tea, camping, rock climbing, board games, volunteering, street art and good eats. Up next on our adventure list is the infamous Rickshaw Run in January of 2016, which will take us across Western India by way of an unreliable little vehicle known as a TukTuk.

As part of our preparations for this event, we will seek to raise $1,000 CDN for each of two separate charities: WINS and Cool Earth. More about each of these charities can be found below, but we wish to emphasize now that ALL MONEY RAISED will go DIRECTLY to the charities themselves; that is to say that Cal and I will be covering all of our own costs independently and that our efforts here are for these two charities alone.

With the help of Go Fund Me, we believe this lofty goal to be well within our reach. As Go Fund Me automatically deducts 5% from each donation to cover their costs, Cal and I pledge to cover that amount taken from your donation and pay it directly to the charity ourselves. This ‘pay-back’ from us, will occur at the end of each month to ensure that your intended dollars arrive fully intact to the chosen charities. At the month’s end, you can expect a page update to ensure that we maintain transparency and accountability with each of you.

Know that we are currently planning two fundraising events, for those who find themselves in Calgary and surrounds, and any monies raised there will also be updated on the page along with the same monthly ‘pay-back’ from Cal and myself. The event information will not be posted here, but through Facebook along with other regular updates regarding ourselves and the Rickshaw Run.

Thank you again for supporting our efforts thus far and we look forward to being able to share this journey with you in return. Every little bit matters. If you have any questions, please send us a message here, or utilize any of our social media pages, and we will reply promptly.

Yours in the name of international memory making,

Laura & Cal.

The Women In Need Society (WINS) is a prominent Calgary based not-for-profit organization of 23 years that benefits women and their families in both big and small ways. In particular, they provide resources and assistance to women entering/leaving shelters, single mothers, women in transition, new immigrants, those on income assistance and the working poor. They currently have four donation driven thrift stores throughout Calgary, as well as six family resource centers, a free goods referral program and an employment program.

Though Cal and I have no personal stories of being in such need ourselves, we ask you to consider standing behind WINS alongside us.  We believe that the void left by having no community and no opportunities to ‘open doors’, can be absolutely devastating to an individual or family of any age or background. Without the right foundation or the opportunity to begin building one, the path to success can be impossible to even imagine, let alone bring to fruition.

Last year, Cal and I each took on a month long challenge to donate a certain number of items per day based on the numerical value of that calendar day, beginning with Oct 1, 2014. I myself made it to only day 15, which meant 120 items were donated, whereas Cal proudly surpassed my numbers and was able to give so much more. Our items were happily received by the staff at the WINS shelter, a sentiment we had hoped to carry forward as we find ways to continue to support them and the great work they are doing in our home city. Now that the opportunity to shine light upon their organization has presented itself once more, we ask you to share in our love and support for them through this upcoming adventure of ours.

Please join us in supporting WINS, a charity given the top 4 star rating by Charity Intelligence, as they continue “helping women and their families help themselves”.

This particular registered charity resonates with us because we are deeply in love with our world’s environments and recognize the fundamental roles it play in our daily lives; whether it’s our lives here in our comfortable first world country, or those living in third world conditions who’ve been dealt further devastation by a recent natural disaster or civil unrest. We believe that this is a more than worthy cause in its own right, and not just because we are world travellers with have plans to explore/appreciate every inch of it.

The organizers of The Rickshaw Run (The Adventurists ), have an official and long standing history with Cool Earth, having raised over 2 million British Pounds in the long overdue battle to save the Rainforest. While providing tangible and more than reputable results, Cool Earth works alongside indigenous villages to halt rainforest destruction with an approach that maintains the utmost respect for the villages’ culture and values. The process begins in a simple manner: the village contacts Cool Earth. From there, they form a partnership to ensure the forest remains under ownership of that village, that funding is spent by the community as a whole (whether the focus is clean water, a new classroom, midwife training, mosquito nets, or any other need), and that no forest is cleared. This partnership further benefits the village by assisting them to earn more for themselves by investing in well-known income streams such as coconut oil, coffee, and cacao.

Essentially, they are a small charity doing big works and they rely solely on donations to do so. According to their website, Cool Earth shares that: “So far, our supporters have saved over 350,000 acres of rainforest and changed the lives of 22,000 rainforest people”.

Please join us and The Adventurists as we back the invaluable work of Cool Earth in saving acres, protecting trees, supporting people/villages, and storing up tonnes of CO2.
