Renovation Project for the Church Repairs

The Olivet Baptist Church was founded in 1953 by a group of 200 (or so) parishioners of Calvary Baptist, another neighborhood church on Wylie avenue. Olivet Baptist Church has served the Hill District community for six decades. Before, the church opened in 1953, the building housed two historic Pittsburgh jazz clubs. During the 1920's, the building housed the Elmore Theater, where the likes of Ma Rainey, Ella Fitzgerald, 'Jelly Roll' Morton, and Bessie Smith. During the 1930's this historic building housed the Pittsburgh's "Savoy Ballroom"

Today, the church is run solely by Reverend Tyrone Munson, and supported by volunteers from its humble congregation. With its pillars of fellowship, servanthood, and love, Olivet meets its community with open arms and open doors. The Olivet Baptist Church has a modest mission: to be a beacon of hope, and a place where people can always come.

The building’s old bones have been covered by drop ceilings, linoleum and wood paneling. But there are still signs of its history, if you look hard enough. A gap in the drop ceiling reveals the grand height of the ballroom; the slightly raked floor under the church pews hints at the past.
