Help Oke Finish Doctoral Studies

Hello,

My name is Okechukwu Okorie, I am a Final Year PhD student studying for a PhD in Manufacturing. My research area aims to investigate the manufacturing data utilized in digital technologies  with the aim of developing a framework for remanufacturing.

For product component, I started with the battery component in Electric Vehicles. However, for data reasons, I'm utilizing Fuel Cells within Electric Vehicles. Thus, important keywords  include Sustainability,  the Sharing Economy, Remanufacturing, Internet-of-Things and Digital Technologies.

I had always wanted to deploy sustainable engineering solutions for ensuring a more sustainable world and  to pass on knowledge to students as an individual and a member of the Academia. While these might be considered admirable, I see it as a privilege. Thus, in 2015, I quit my job and started my PhD in Cranfield University- another privilege. This has always been a dream of mine.

With 6 months of my PhD to go, I'm at the stage where I'm wondering if this dream can be achieved. Because of my tuition fees.

The PhD life has been an interesting one -extremely challenging but enjoyable. In Cranfield, we have internal assessments at various stages of our research -4 in all (asides the viva). I have had 3 out of those 4, and I have passed them excellently.  I have produced 3 conference papers and two of those papers are currently being worked on as journal papers. I have planned out another journal paper writing with colleagues at Sheffield. Currently, I am on target to produce 6 papers at the end of my PhD -three conference papers and three journal papers, if I work hard enough.

And, more importantly, if my Tuition Fees can be met.

In my first external conference at  the University of Glasgow, I won an award for the academic presentation I made.  It was a "Best Poster (Education) Award" at the Network Plus: Industrial Systems in the Digital Age Conference, a UK/EPRSC conference.

This year, I started my registration to become a STEM ambassador.  Because, even after my PhD, I would want to teach students as a volunteer in addition with a main role elsewhere.

My PhD was supposed to have been funded. This, on several occasions, did not happen. Thankfully, we got some funding for a research grant, however, this was not sufficient enough for my tuition fees. My University has been lenient on me, but I recognize that this has to come with some effort from me.

As an international student, the tuition fees can be quite large. For PhDs it is even more. More than anyone else, I understand how unrealistic this may seem. However, I have run out of accessible options but not hope. Studying for a PhD is hope. Working day and nights is hope. Telling a student that Maths or Advanced Maths is not as difficult as s/he think it is, is hope.

I love what I do. I have grown to love research  and the academia.

No amount is too small. This is what I believe. The target amount is just over 75% of my tuition debt. With your help, I believe I can meet this. And also the balance.

It took me quite some time to get around to do this. Months, if I am honest.  I have donated to other peoples campaigns. I never thought I would do one myself. Then one of my former line managers sent this to me: "No, Oke, this can't end like this. Have you tried crowdfunding?"

Please help if you can. If you can't, then please share this page as widely as you can. I have a very short time to raise this money -less than 3 weeks. However, I believe that it is possible. Sometimes, this keeps playing in my head 45,000 people to give £1 each!

Every little helps.

I have attached the last results of my internal review and the award certificate.

Thank you for reading. Pardon me if this is too long. I have not done this before.
And thank you so much for helping out. This PhD is  for you too.

I will certainly make mention of your names, regardless of the length, in my final thesis- and upload the picture here, when the time comes. My little way of saying, "thank you."

I am grateful.

Oke.
