Alton Central School 2016, 8th Grade Class Trip to Washinton DC.
People are telling me it can't be done, but I am not ready to give up. What am I talking about? Let me fill you in. I'm a 7th grader at Alton Central School, my class and I have been working for over a year to do something that has never been done in Alton before. Our class wants to travel to Washington DC to learn our country’s history, explore an awesome city, and to pay respect to our fallen heros by hopefully being chosen to present a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. For over a year we have worked on our own, and have raised $4,500. Now it is crunch time, and we still have lots of ideas left, but we realize we are going to need some outside help to reach our goal.
This project is so important to me, because my outlook changed when I visited DC. I realized that I needed to care about what was happening within our country, I realized what was sacrificed to make this country, and I feel indebted to become a better citizen because of it. I truly believe that this is how we are going to raise my generation to be citizens that care about current issues, whether it is deciding to make a change or just being an informed voter.
I am fortunate, I have visited DC twice with my family, but I also know there are many children in my class that will never have that chance. Everyone needs to see our history, they need to experience it, watch our government at work, and being there in the midst of it all is so much different than reading about it in history books. I hope you will join my vision, I truly believe that it is one worth investing in.
