Oh! You Pretty Things & NOCCA Aid

Donation protected
In July 2016, New Orleans burlesque performer Bella Blue and Vox and the Hound guitarist and Offbeat contributor Rory Callais came together to produce a burlesque tribute to David Bowie entitled Space Oddi-TEASE. Blue and Callais want to make the 2017 edition of the show bigger and better. The 2017 show -- Oh! You Pretty Things: an Immersive Theatrical David Bowie Experience -- will take place at the Howlin' Wolf on July 15 and feature more performers, more musicians, and more overall production. This, of course, means more overhead. Last year, Blue and Callais were able to meet their goals from ticket sales. While they are optimistic they can put on another well-attended show, they want to ensure that their extra performers are compensated. So they need a little extra help to make this show the best it could be.

However, the performers are not the only ones who need help. This past January, some of Bowie’s friends and collaborators got together to hold a concert on what would have been David’s 70th birthday. The proceeds went to Children and the Arts, a UK-based arts school for young people. In the ultimate tribute to Bowie’s legacy, Blue and Callais want to do the same for young, aspiring arts students right here in New Orleans. That’s why the bulk of your donation will go to NOCCA, the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts.

Blue and Callais’ goal is $4,000, with $3,000 going to the NOCCA Institute -- NOCCA’s nonprofit community support and advocacy partner -- and $1,000 going to help cover the additional overhead. Any funds raised past the initial goal will also be donated to NOCCA. Your money will be a donation to an organization that directly benefits young artists, musicians, dancers, actors, writers, and chefs at the start of their arts education while simultaneously supporting active performers and musicians as they continue their creative endeavors.

Your donation will fund initiatives like student financial aid, artist-in-residence programs, NOCCA’s expansion along Press Street, and various arts and literary events around the city. You will be upholding a great New Orleans tradition, as many NOCCA grads have gone on to do great things, like Trombone Shorty, Harry Connick, Jr., Sasha Masakowski, the Marsalis brothers, Wendell Pierce, Wanda Boudreaux, and Sam and Jack Craft of Sweet Crude. In fact, both Bella and Rory attended NOCCA!

Further, your money will help these NOCCA alums put on a fantastic show with performances by Bella Blue, Angie Z, and Lola van Ella set to live Bowie songs from a band featuring Rory Callais, Leo DeJesus from Vox and the Hound, Micah McGee from Little Maker, Marion Tortorich formerly of Sweet Crude, and Erik Corveau. Plus many more artists still in the works!

So please lend a hand in supporting arts education in New Orleans while also making the 2017 edition of Blue and Callais’ David Bowie tribute bigger and better than ever! See you on July 15 at the Howlin' Wolf!
