Officer Carrie Maner's husband Derek was diagnosed with cancer several years ago. They have fought together and remained strong despite all of the obstacles in their way. The cancer has spread in such a way where it is no longer treatable and the hospital staff is making Derek as comfortable as they can. They are a couple who will never ask for help but I know that Derek is their second income and they will need all the help they can get. Every single dollar will help tremendously so I urge you to give even a little bit. Thank you all. From Derek  This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do but I want to explain myself and my actions. I have been struggling with Stage 4 colon cancer since 2014. It has taken many turns and many twist and it has always been an uphill battle. I was continually doing treatment (chemotherapy) and other medications to help. There had been a tumor found in my liver that was blocking all my bile ducts so my liver wasn’t draining properly causing me to go septic. I went in for emergency surgery to have stents put in to drain my liver. This brought my numbers down and doctors thought that all was well. My condition though began to decline as I went further into treatment post radiation. I then made the hardest decision I have ever had to make and that was to cease treatment and attempt to improve my quality of life. But since the radiation something wasn’t right and I knew yet the doctors did nothing to follow up on possible damage. I became very sick. Throwing. Up 4-5 times weekly. In the course of 4 months I lost 50 lbs and became very week. I was laying in bed trying to put myself to sleep which is very difficult at this point due to the constant pain. In a sudden moment things turned and I began throwing up violently and the vomit was a black bile substance I had never seen before. This continued for the rest of the night in 20 min increments and I only went to sleep after 10 hours of this non stop. Christmas Day I went to my fathers house to spend with family and still had no energy and was still throwing up. My dad rushed me to the duke emergency room and they began frantically testing. The results are in and they are very grim. I have 2 major infections as well as a hole in my stomach and my stomach is not working so it has swollen the size of a soccer ball and needed to be pumped for a few days. Here is the hard part. The main physician has consulted with all other departments with possibilities. There are 2 options. 1 being we give me antibiotics, pain medication and a drain to my liver to make me as comfortable as possible. 2 we attempt to control the infection with antibiotics special to my lab cultures and then drain the liver, add a stent and then possibly perform surgery on the stomach to close the hole. With that there is a possibility of me passing while surgery is being performed but it would give me months instead of weeks. This is me telling all my family, friends and supporters that I have ver little time.  With that being said I have one last request and it’s asking a lot but I don’t know any other way. I was working full time with all my symptoms trying to help support our family and alleviate our debt but it looks as if I will no longer be able to do that. I am asking everyone that sees this to help my family with as little as much as you feel fit. I’m not asking to donate hundreds of dollars but any donation and a share will help put me at ease. I can’t imagine leaving carrie behind with an endless debt and crippling bills. I did everything in my power to work as much as physically possible and put aside as much money as possible but this is the end for me and I am pleading for compassion and help. Carrie has supported me every moment of this disease and now I have to leave her behind. This is a go fund me created by one of her fellow officers to help with this among the law enforcement community. But all I ask is a donation if possible and a share that takes one click. Please this is my final wish. I love you all and I can’t begin to thank you all for the support and love that I have received.
