The Oceana High School cooking program was started in 2010 to support the school garden and to provide lifelong skills to its students. Last year, the now vegetarian cooking class catered Pie Ranch's Gratitude Dinner for 60 people, the Oceana Staff Holiday Meal and the Career Day Luncheon. Since its inception the students have made and sold Thanksgiving pies as its major fundraiser-last year, the students made over 120 pies - walnut, pumpkin or sweet potato.
It costs about $4500 per year to run the class, since the students cook almost every class period. Last year, the district provided zero funds to support this important course, so the students and Laurie Hughes, the teacher,  had to raise all the funds. It is unclear whether the district will provide any financial help this year. In the past the district has provided any where from $500 to $1000, still far short of the necessary funds.
Each year, Laurie creates a cooking book of all the recipes that were used in the year. Recipes range from pizza crust to challah to empanadas to quinoa patties to chocolate puddings. All donors to this campaign will receive a link to last year's cookbook.
