I was awoken by a phone call at 2am on December 11th. A police officer told me my brother George, known by most of Buffalo as Penev, was shot four times in the chest by a Fredonia Police Officer on Monday, December 10th at 1:30 in the afternoon. The officer’s attorney stated that the officer will not be charged.

Those of you who were lucky enough to know George were probably also his friend; he had an amazing ability to get along with everyone he met. He was quiet, but every time he spoke was well thought out; with reason and logic, showing wisdom beyond his years.

George had the biggest heart, ever since he was little. He loved our cousin Marie so much that when our parents told him he was going to have a new little sister, he got so excited and insisted I be named Marie too, which is how I was named. When he was playing EMW soccer as a little kid, he would always take an extra snack and drink that the moms brought and make sure I got one too even though I wasn’t on the team. George was the kind of person to literally give you the shirt off his back (or his blanket) and sleep in the cold so that you wouldn’t have to, and he wouldn’t wait for you to ask.

My brother loved living life, the living embodiment of the quote “I’m here for a good time not a long time”. He was always up for going out, ready to spend time with his friends or interact with the world around him. George was one of the very few people I have met in my life who literally seemed to brighten up any room he walked into with his happy-go-lucky attitude and his loud, infectious laugh. He was always smiling his huge ear to ear grin, happiness and positivity radiating from him.

The first time he had a bonfire, he didn’t tell my parents or I he planned to have anyone over. He invited some friends while no one was home, and my parents and I were surprised to see our lawn covered in cars when we arrived later that night. The bonfire was legendary, although there was litter covering our entire yard afterwards. I knew he had quality friends because they would stay over just to help clean up the next day. The first time I ever went to one of his bonfires, he greeted me with “MARIA! You’re at my party!” and his huge smile.

George was taken from us far too soon, leaving empty spaces in hearts all around the world, from Buffalo to Bulgaria.

I am starting this GoFundMe to help cover funeral and service costs, as well as attorney fees, during this difficult time. Please share or donate in order to make more people aware of what happened to George Penev. Thank you to all who took the time to read this, and to anyone affected by the loss of my brother, I am so sorry, yet also thankful that he had so many people who cared about him and loved him so much.
