No Predators

According to recent BFI statistics women are massively under-represented in film, both behind and in front of the camera. The BFI’s Filmography, which analyses more than 10,000 films and 250,000 cast and crew members, revealed that less than 1% of films made between 1913 and 2017 had a majority female crew; only 4.5% of all films have been directed by a woman; and there were fewer women in front of the camera in 2017 than in 1913.

Other research has shown that women have had to put up with high levels of sexual harassment, bullying and rarely have equal opportunities or receive equal pay.

In 2018 women are still explicitly or implicitly encouraged not to direct films, not to pursue careers in film and to take subordinate roles as actors.

For women in the industry this is a pretty sad state of affairs. The broader impact is also worth considering. What is the societal effect of watching films which consistently feature  women in subordinate roles?

This the 100th year of the suffragette movement and equality in employement, equality in pay and the correct attitude towards women is still the exception and not the norm.

What Is Boudica?

Boudica was set up in 2013 by Rebecca Long and Ian Davies to increase the number of female-centric films being made – films with lead female roles / female directors and at least 50% representation in crew. We are the only film fund in Europe which has this focus.  http://www.boudicafilms.co.uk

Boudica has already provided finance for several films like The Falling, gaining 3 BAFTA nominations for lead female roles and often supporting 'first-time' female directors. On recent film Kat and the Band 62.5% of the HODs (Heads Of Department) were female and 53% of the rest of the crew were female.

Our most recent film Mari, supported by Film London and BFI, featured a first-time feature producer, director and lead – all female.

We aim to produce and support films which help to right the gender imbalance that is prevelent throughout society.

In October 2017 Boudica set the #NoPredators campaign in motion through its own resources, setting up a phoneline for women in the industry who had suffered sexual harassment, establishing a code of conduct and seeking at least 50% representation of women on all films it supports. Our motto is Standing for Women. Driving the Change.

We are now looking to continue and extend our #NoPredators campaign and are calling on a wider community to support our efforts. Money raised will be used for the following:

Legal advice: Boudica will continue the #NoPredators legal helpline with our partners at Equal Justice Solicitors, for film professionals who have experienced sexual harassment.

More female-led films, more women employed: we will help more films with lead female characters / female directors / productions with at least 50% female crew get made by providing finance / mentoring.

Prevention: We will aim to get more productions to
use Boudica's ‘Code of Conduct’ that gives all crew members and anyone involved in films we support a clear route map of what and what isn't acceptable.

Mentorship: Boudica will start a mentorship program to provide support to female filmmakers struggling to move to the next step in their careers.

Advocacy: Boudica will continue its campaign in supporting equal rights, pay and opportunities.

Who manages the fund?

The ‘No Predators’ fund will be managed by Rebecca Long and Ian Davies, who have overseen the funding programme of the initial slate of films and who have set the #NoPredators campaign into action.

We will publish a report which will show how money was spent and analyse the benefits of our campaign on an annual basis.

We invite you to be part of the No Predators story and we will only say 'cut' once we have seen a satisfying finale and equality in our industry is the norm not the exception.

Thank you for supporting this campaign with your donation and for spreading the word to others. No donation is too small. We believe we can affect real change in the film industry now. With film we have the power to communicate to millions of people and change attitudes towards women and our society.

The workplace is supposed to be an environment which is  inspiring, not discouraging, and we are determined to help redress the balance and help more female voices get heard.
