Hi,
My name is Coralie. I am a nursing student, going into the second year of my nursing degree. I am passionate about alternative medicine. I have been given the opportunity to study Ayurevedic medicine for 4 weeks in India, at a place called Trivandrum.
Ayurvedam is classed as an alternative therapy in the UK but is part of a mainstream treatment in Kerala. It is part of a holistic lifestyle in india, which includes yoga. It's an holistically herbal treatment and most people will seek ayurvedic remedies for common maladies. It was developed more than 3,000 years ago in india. It's based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body and spirit.
I start this placement mid July and finish mid August 2018.
The funds raised will help pay for my flights which are around £1,000 and the expense of the company I am going with, that will be providing my placement and accomodation which is £1,195. In addition I will need to purchase a visa, insurance and injections.
I hope to gain experience in this area of nursing, as I believe it is the most accessable to people in deprived areas, where malnutrition is common place.
I plan to volunteer in countries, such as India that have deprived areas where people have limited access to health education and treatment.
This kind of expeience will enable me to work towards my goal; to learn about diverse people, cultures, belief systems and world views, increase self-confidence and cultural competence skills. This will essentially provide me with the skills-set to understand more about people and their varying lifestyles, to be more effective in helping people through illness towards wellness.
