Naomi & Steph's Move Fund

There are phone calls that parents dread. When the kids are little, it's the call from the babysitter (you leave your phone on vibrate during the movie just in case). When they're teens, it's the call in the middle of the night, where you're pulling on pants and checking their bed before the second ring. Then they're young adults, with jobs and partners and their own apartment -- and when the phone rings at 7 am on a Sunday and you see their number, you know it isn't just to catch up. Your heart drops and you take a deep breath before you answer it.

This Sunday morning, Jason got that call. "Dad? I'm sorry to call so early. I need help."

Naomi is a young trans woman. She's been "out" and living as her whole self for less than a year -- in fact, since she quit her job in a hostile work environment and took a better job at a home improvement retail establishment (she looks great in orange). She and her partner Steph were high school sweethearts and will celebrate their 7th anniversary in February. Each of them has a wicked sense of humor, and they're talented, interesting women. They are also (in the opinion of a certain stepmom who does not receive nearly enough pictures of them) an adorable couple.

This past weekend, their safety at home was threatened and they were summarily kicked out. Naomi's Sunday morning call to Jason was because they were suddenly homeless.

Things have been tumultuous and will continue to be for a little while. Jason drove 8 hours round-trip in a day to help them load up and remove their personal belongings. They have a place they can crash for the next few weeks, they're safe and fed, and they have all their stuff. They don't have to go back to their former home and they're not on the street.

What we're asking for help with is moving expenses to get them to Minneapolis. They were already making plans and saving money to move in 2017 but now we need to squeeze 9 months into 3-4 weeks, and a cross-country move isn't cheap. Support from this fundraiser will go directly to Naomi and Steph for a moving van or storage cube, first/last month's rent plus security deposit, living expenses for any gap in employment, and enough duct tape to hold everything together.
