National Young Leaders Conference

Donation protected
On June 24 – 29, 2017, I (Ellie) have the opportunity to travel to Washington, DC to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference.  I am very excited about attending this event this summer.

I will be representing Holy Trinity Catholic School in Winsted, Minnesota. I was nominated by my English teacher, Mr. Todd Rogers for this opportunity.  The cost for the program $ 2,495, not including airfare. This fee includes the 6 day 5 night stay and all activities. While my parents are contributing, I am helping by doing fundraising on my own. I am hoping to get help, from friends, family, and people who want to help a young leader get the opportunity of a lifetime.

While in Washington, DC, I will learn about the sacrifices that Americans have made during times of war by visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial. I will also visit the National Museum of American History. By touring the historic Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, I will study John Brown’s 1859 raid and the group will discuss the choices and consequences of leadership.

Throughout the conference, we will be hearing from a variety of speakers who will talk to the audience about leadership.  Leadership is not just about being the top dog and having the final say on decisions.  Leadership is a heavy burden because it requires making important decisions about money, policy, or other life changing issues.  However, it is critical to have good leaders in positions of power, whether it is government, business, or in religious organizations.  That is why it is important to train good people to become talented leaders for our future.

At Holy Trinity, I am on the A Honor Roll.   While at the conference, I will be working with other students on the Voices of Change project in which I will create an action-oriented plan to create positive change at my school and in my community. I submitted paperwork in order to run for student council in the fall as an 8th grader at Holy Trinity.  I hope to win a seat on the student council in order to have a platform to roll out the Voices of Change plan.

Finally, for fun, we are having an overnight at the Maryland Science Center among the exhibits – a true Night at the Museum!
