NOW WALK IN MY SHOES

Donation protected
The Interfaith Council of Greater Rancho Santa Margarita,  representing local congregations from churches, mosques and synagogues from seven surrounding cities, will coordinate the Bigotry, Bullying & Bravery youth forum to support middle and high school students learn more about strategies, stories and support for bullying.

What:  The Bigotry, Bullying & Bravery Youth Forum  - Now Walk in My Shoes

When:  September 9th, 1:00-4:30pm

Where:  St. John's Episcopal School, 30382 Via Con Dios, Rancho Santa Margarita

Who:  Coordinated by the Interfaith Council of Greater Rancho Santa Margarita

Why:  We are all painfully  aware of the disturbing statistics related to bullying:  In 2016, NCES reported that more than 1 our of every 5 students reported being bullied (CDC 2015). Students are bullied for their appearance, beliefs, race, faith, and/or socio-economic background. 20% of high school students are bullied on school property, and LGBT and disabled students are 2 to 3 times more likely to be bullied than other students.  Furthermore, bullied students have a strong association with suicidal behaviors and tendencies.  We decided to do something about it in our community.

The Event:

The afternoon will open with “work” projects to help participants relate to each other and bond, and will include bags for the homeless, notes and get-well-cards to kids at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC).

Next, there will be breakout groups discussing Bigotry and Bullying.   Student leaders are already being trained to work with and mentor the younger students who attend. This component will allow students to  safely discuss personal  experiences with bullying or the experiences of friends  or other students.

Later in the afternoon, the group will “break bread” together over pizza and salad. The afternoon will conclude with  breakout groups focused on Bravery—what it means and what it takes to stand up for someone who is being bullied. And, participants will learn how to stand up against Bigotry of any kind whether it be cultural, religious, sexual orientation, mentally/physically challenged or socioeconomic. Opportunities to sign pledge cards from PACER, a national bullying prevention organization, will be offered to each participant.  Also, resources from other organizations will be available to the students to share with their friends.
