Fire Reconstruction

On my 40th birthday, we left the house to head to the coast to celebrate as a family.  30 minutes later, we got a call from our neighbor telling us that our house was burning.  When we got home, we discovered that our dog had turned on the stove and our kitchen had burned.  The fire and smoke traveled up the stairs to the children's bedrooms.  Thankfully, their doors were closed so the fire was more contained.  We are facing massive renovations, and they estimate it will be another 6 months before we can move back in.

We met with our insurance adjuster today, and he explained that our homeowners policy will not pay for the replacement value of what we lost.  Instead we will get the depreciated value of the structural items.  We're looking at potentially thousands of dollars worth of damage that our insurance settlement won't cover.
