Problem

Brian M. Rhodes is a 36-yr.-old father of 2 daughters, who was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in 2010. His initial weight was 310 lbs. Through diet and exercise, he achieved a weight of 185-200 lbs, until 2013. Though he continued to work and did his best to control diabetes, he was unsuccessful.

In 2013, Brian developed Peripheral Neuropathy, and later Autonomic Neuropathy (complication of diabetes). This condition causes pain throughout his body, numbness, and a loss of sensation in extremities. In addition, he has excessive bowel movements each day (20-30), which keeps him up all night (doctors believe this is directly caused by diabetes).  Due to this, he feels depleted and sleep deprived every day. This continued cycle has made it impossible for him to maintain a healthy weight. He is now at his lowest weight of 139 lbs. On occasion, he faints due to a drop in blood pressure. His condition is critical and must change to live.

Effect

In early 2017, Brian developed blisters on several parts of his body that continue to burst and now have the appearance of burns. It was found to be a Staph infection and later MRSA. In May of 2017, his left pinky toe had to be amputated. From May until October, he was hospitalized several times due to infections and out-of-control blood sugars. Now, the hospitalizations have become more frequent, he struggles to keep enough nutrients in his body, and has become weaker and more malnourished.
In November, he was admitted and diagnosed with Sepsis because of a Staph infection, Strep, and E.Coli in his bloodstream. At this time, Brian also had a bone infection that resulted in having additional bone removed from his left foot. A PICC line was inserted for him to receive 6-weeks of antibiotic treatment. He is currently hospitalized because of infection in the same foot. His red blood cell count was so low, he had to get a blood transfusion. The doctors are trying to find an antibiotic that is sensitive to these current bacteria.

How you can help

Because he is unable to work, Brian cannot get health insurance that will allow for better medical care.  Also, he can’t take care of his daily needs, such as getting wholesome foods, medications, and a place to live. Brian is in extreme need of the funds necessary to attend a treatment center for neuropathy, and for supplies such as dressings to maintain a clean cover for his infected foot.
He needs specialists who can better explore treatment options to get the care he needs to survive this battle. He has major outstanding medical bills that have been piling up for the last 4 years. ALL help would be greatly appreciated!
