NJHS End-of-Year Trip!

Donation protected

June 9, 2017

Dear Donors,

Thank you so much for contributing to BUGS’s National Junior Honor Society end-of-year trip! Our student leaders have accomplished so much this year and we look forward to celebrating with them. Unfortunately, we were unable to meet our trip goal of $5,000 so we cannot afford the overnight trip at Greenkill Education Center this year. Fortunately, we have designed an amazing day trip in the city! We will be using your generous donations to fund a day of learning and team building at Coney Island.

This trip fits in perfectly were our 6th and 7th grade curriculum! Students will experience New York City’s most famous coast and summer attraction. We will discuss the seasonal economics of surrounding neighborhoods and theme park’s contribution to Brooklyn cultural. We will look for evidence to answer the question, “has Coney Island Boardwalk helped or harmed it’s physical environment?” Most importantly, we are going to celebrate the hard work and achievements of BUGS’s first NJHS class.

Thanks again for your generosity.

As always, please continue to Brooklyn Urban Garden School's founding National Junior Honor Society to continue our awesome leadership work!

Brooklyn Urban Garden School is a Title 1 school-- we have a high percentage of children from low-income families. We serve ALL types of students from all over Brooklyn. Traveling from various neighborhoods, our Park Slope school is a safe haven for many.
Our Title 1 school's chapter of NJHS includes 30 exceptional 6th, 7th and 8th grade students with a 3.5 GPA or higher, stellar behavior and a commitment to community service.

National Junior Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1929.

So far this year, 10 of our students attended the LEAD conference in Washington , D.C. Our goal is to continue to foster their passion for leadership, service and honor through more real world experiences.  Additionally, we have participated in these acitivies:
- Raising money and awareness for Autism by sponsering a bakesale and free uniform day
- team building ice skating in Prospect Park
- Sewed two "ugly sleeping bags" for the Ugly Quilt Project , which provides hand made, upcycled sleeping bags for NYCs Homeless
-Successfully orchastrated Oxfam Benefit to bring awareness to world hunger.
