On the afternoon of September the 2nd, Nikeela had won two races and was in the lead for another when the unthinkable happened.  Her mount summersaulted, obliterating her spine leaving her paralyzed from the ribs down.  She also suffered secondary injuries ranging from facial lacerations to a collapsed lung.  It is amazing she survived.

Challenge and adversity have always been a part of Nikeela's life and have forged her into the person we all know and love.  She now faces her greatest challenge yet; the process of relearning how to perform tasks that were once second nature.  The road to recovery will be long and demanding, filled with physical and emotional difficulties.

Today, Nikeela's spirit remains as strong as ever.  It is a true joy to see her familiar spunk and wit emerging again.  With the recent events, we have all been reminded how drastically life can change in an instant.

We are asking for contributions from those who have been touched or inspired by Nikeela. This fund will be dedicated to the construction of a living space that will eliminate some of the impediments that will be confronting her on a daily basis.  She is tough, she's got this, she's a surviver.  This fund is about creating a space for her to thrive as she takes on this fresh challenge.

Sorry I am so slow to post updates here. Hopefully most of you are following me on Facebook or Instagram, in which case this is old news. Therapy continues to go well. I had my fourth driving lesson this week. My FES bike got installed this week and its SO nice to be able to work out again! I am so very grateful to have this great piece of equipment for home use!

I was cleaning a couple weeks ago and ran across this picture from 2014. I thought "I was fierce!" and I was overcome with sadness knowing I will never again break from the starting gate and know the pure surge of joy of winning a horse race. I quickly hid the picture away because I didn't want to be reminded of what I was. Today I pulled it out again because while the love of winning races will never go away, I realized I had been wrong in my initial response. I AM fierce! And that it what is going to get me through this next chapter in my life. 2018 was filled with many highs, including winning the Bitterroot and AQHA juvenile challenge for the third time, opening my own law and mediation practice, getting to spend alot of time with my sister Tereva while in rehab, and getting to connect with my husband is ways I never thought possible. I am ready for 2019. Happy New Year everyone! Be fierce!!

So I must share my great PT session. I was able to stand in the standing frame at 90 degrees (75 was the highest I had made it previously) for 15 mins. My body has adjusted blood pressure-wise to allow me to be in the standing position. Then I got on the mat and worked on balancing on my hands and knees. Then my PT asked me to do some exercising that required my abs and back to engage. He was very surprised by the results. He says my abs and back muscles are engaging down to about T12 (5 levels below my level of injury). Still no sensation, but will be a great help for mobility purposes. I credit this as a direct answer to prayer! I am so thankful for my PT, he does a great job! Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers...keep it up, because its working!! Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year!

I made it home from Craig about a month ago. I was so excited to be home for Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday! I had much to be thankful for this year! I was blessed to be able to spend it at home with family.
However, things have been a little harder than I expected being home since the home adaptations are not complete yet. I increased my goal because now that I am home I have a better idea of what I am going to need in order to make my life more comfortable, and insurance doesn't cover everything. I also have additional everyday expenses which are not covered and I am still unable to drive or work. I am continuing my physical therapy here in Boise and am getting stronger every day. I am working on getting onto my hands and knees (which is hard with no abs!) and getting into the standing bars next week! Thank you all so much for your generous donations and encouraging words!
