Nicky's journey

I know there are so many people who love Nicky as much as I do.  Here is what is going on right now.  A few weeks ago Nicky went to the ER with back pain thinking she may possibly have a kidney infection.  After running some tests and doing a CT scan, they found out that she has cancer in her kidney. She was sent home and met with the oncologist 2 days later who ran more tests.  The cancer had spread in her body.  The oncologist she saw sent her to the Mayo clinic in Rochester, MN which is about 5 hours from Nicky's house.  Last week she stayed in Rochester and they ran test after test. They originally diagnosed her with stage 3 renal cell carcinoma. This is very rare for people her age to get, and is known to spread to kidneys, lungs and brain.  They found a blood clot very close to her heart and immediatley put her on blood thinners that she has to inject into her stomach twice daily.  They decided to do a biopsy of her kidney and liver on Wednesday. Thursday was a bone scana and brain MRI.  They let her go home on Thursday night and Friday morning she received results that the cancer has spread to her liver as well.  Friday afternoon Nicky had severe pain and knew something was wrong, she was rushed to the ER in her town and then transferred to a bigger hospital.  She was hemorrhaging from her liver where the biopsy was done.  She had a blood transfusion on her way there and 2 more since. She has also had platelet transfusions to try and stop the bleeding.  The bleeding did not stop and she was taken into surgery yesterday. They put a coil in to stop the bleeding and she is currently in ICU.  Nicky has a very long road ahead of her and will be going back to the Mayo clinic as soon as she is well enough to be transported.
