Nia's Commonwealth Dream

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page.

I’ll tell you a bit about Nia and her big dream of competing at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Nia started doing Artistic Gymnastics at the age of 5 and thoroughly enjoyed it, going 2-3 times a week for a few hours. At the age of 7, Nia’s coach suggested that due to her flexibility, she may want to try out Rhythmic Gymnastics as it may be more suited to her skills.

I took her to Llanelli Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy (LRGA) to try it out and Nia was immediately selected for their squad training. Roll on 4 years, still at LRGA, Nia has remained committed and dedicated to her dream, missing out on school/friend events in order to train, training 6 days a week. Nia has now been selected for the Welsh Rhythmic Gymnastics Commonwealth Squad in preparation for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Whilst there is no guarantee that Nia will compete, she is the youngest of 7 girls selected, and the top 3 at the time will compete....she will then work towards 2026....a long road ahead!

In order for Nia to work towards this goal, she will continue to compete under LRGA name, however the majority of her training has now moved to Cardiff where she trains with Welsh Gymnastics Commonwealth Squad. Her training schedule involves training 6 days a week:

Monday 4pm – 8pm
Tuesday 7am – 9am & 4pm – 8pm
Wednesday 2pm – 8pm
Thursday 7am - 9am & 4pm – 8pm
Friday 4pm – 8pm (Llanelli)
Saturday 9am – 2pm

As you can imagine, living and attending school in Swansea, involves a massive commitment from Nia and both her parents. Whilst Nia is loving her experience and the opportunities given to her, it does bring with it associated financial pressures, as the sport is self-funded. These costs include fees to train, travel costs, competition fees, apparatus, handmade leotards and accommodation for competitions, adding up to £7000 on average per year. For this purpose we are trying to raise some funds to go towards the cost of all of this and all money raised will go towards Nia’s dream.

Forthcoming events: Nia has an exciting opportunity to attend her first European Competition in November 2018 in Portugal, the RG Atlantic Cup, where she will be competing her ball, ribbon and clubs routines, before competing in the British Gymnastics Open Apparatus Competition a few weeks after that.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and any support you could offer is greatly appreciated.
