Jory Nash's 9th Studio Recording

My name is Jory Nash. I'm a  4 time Canadian Folk Music Award nominee, a Folk Music Ontario Songs From The Heart winner, a Penguin Eggs Magazine Album of the Year recipient. I've recorded 8 CDs over 20 years and I'm excited to announce that I'm ready to record my 9th studio CD.  And I need your help to do so!

It costs a lot of money to make a great sounding, well-arranged and expertly played recording. Studio rentals, engineering fees, musicians fees all add up, and the simple fact is that without a decent amount of pre-sales via crowdfunding campaigns like this one I can no longer afford to make records. BUT...with your help I will be able to get to work and create a new CD that I know my fans will be excited about.  And I've added some very unique and hopefully interesting Reward Levels for this campaigns that will excite all potential supporters.

The new CD will be recorded and mixed at two amazing facilities: Union Sound Company
and Subterranean Sound, which features the legendary NEVE Air Montserrat console:
Both studios feature an amazing array of vintage outboard gear and tube mics, critical to the high quality of sound my recordings are famous for.

The record will be recorded and mixed by my long-time co-producer CHRIS STRINGER. Chris is a much-sought after producer/engineer who has recorded Wooden Sky, Elliott Brood, Great Lakes Swimmers, Timber Timbre, Jill Barber and so many more.
I have approached a number of musicians and singers to perform on the record and they include Jason Fowler, Gary Craig, Lori Cullen, Michael Johnston, Kurt Swinghammer, Raven Kanatakta, Brian MacMillan, Kevin Fox, Burke Carroll, Redd Volkaert, Oh Susanna and more but the exact final line-up will depend on how much I can raise here. Musicians deserve a fair wage and I insist on paying my players decently. Assuming I am successful at raising the needed money all these players and more will be appearing on the recording.

The recording will feature 12 new original songs. I have been writing these songs for the last 18 months and I feel they are some of the most interesting, melodic and compelling pieces I've ever written. I've been road testing them for months and the responses have been wonderful. I'd dearly love the opportunity to arrange and record these songs with all the fine musicians I have mentioned.  Again, that's where your help can make it happen!

The album will be mastered by my long time mastering engineer Joao Carvalho at Joao Carvalho Mastering. Joao is simply legendary and the number of artists he has worked with is staggering.

The CD will be beautifully designed and packaged with a multi-page booklet highlighting the lyrics and other interesting notes.

I recognize that many people are tiring of crowdfunding campaigns, that they are fast becoming ubiquitious. I've also heard stories about artists not fulfilling their moral obligation after raising money for a project by finishing it on time. Please know that I am beyond grateful for the support I receive and will finish this album on time and will get the finished product in your hands when promised. But...I also want to REALLY make this worth your while and have come up with some very unique and exciting rewards in addition to pre-ordering the CD to entice you to support this campaign. I hope you find the reward that resonates most with you and consider contributing.

Also, you are more than welcome to donate to the campaign and choose not to receive a reward - just click on Donate Now at the top right of the page.

I am hoping to raise at least $15,000 here (which after gofundme takes its cut and HST is backed out really comes to closer to $12,000). The album budget is at least $20,000 and personal savings of about $10,000 have been set aside to make up the gap between what I need and what I am hoping to raise here. If I am able to raise more than expected I will use the money to hire additional musicians and spend a few extra days in the studio recording and mixing.

Last, I want to stress that I have decided that this will be my final crowdfunding campaign. I take very seriously the notion of asking for your support and I am cognizant about going to the well once too often. Therefore I am pledging that this will be my final crowdfunding campaign, and possiby my final recording ever. I hope you will consider supporting me and my music one more time.

Gratefully yours,
Jory Nash

Hi All:
Lots to update you on regarding my new CD, which you have helped make happen through your generous support!

We’ve just wrapped up another 7 days of recording at Union Sound Studios. 98% of the recording is done and we are now beginning the mixing process. And I’ve booked a date at Joao Carvalho Mastering on April 23rd, which is the final stage of the process before manufacturing.

Also, I’ve hired designer Roberta Landreth to create the artwork and layout. You can see some of Roberta’s amazing work here: http://www.designbyroberta.com/

Last, designer A Man Called Wrycraft is putting the finishing touches on the limited edition tshirt design that many of you purchased as part of your crowdfunding reward level. I don’t have everyone’s tshirt size order (and whether you want male or female) so I will be contacting some of you directly in the next few weeks to get that info. I’m currently pricing out colours, brands and printing costs.

The recording has also grown in vision and scope. Originally, I had thought this would be a stripped down, mostly acoustic record but as the new tunes were written and others substituted it became clear that something a little bolder and grandiose from a production standpoint was the right path. It has become, without a doubt, my most expansive (and expensive) recording, sonically wide and broad in scope. And I’ve branched out in a few musical directions for some songs that might surprise listeners. I’m really excited to share what I am now pretty sure will be my last recording for the foreseeable future. Go big or go home, and I chose to go big.

To wit, I want to highlight all the key musical personnel who have been a part of the recording process on this album. Here, in alphabetical order are the amazing artists:

BURKE CARROLL: pedal steel
GARY CRAIG: drums & percussion
LORI CULLEN: harmony and backing vocals
DEAN DROUILLARD: 6 & 12 string electric guitars, E-Bow
JASON FOWLER: acoustic, electric and resonator guitars
KEVIN FOX: cello
JEROME GODBOO: harmonica
ROBBIE GRUNWALD: piano, organ, Wurlitzer, accordion
GENE HARDY: saxophone
DREW JURECKA: violin/string section
JORY NASH: acoustic guitar, lead, harmony and backing vocals
LYDIA PERSAUD: harmony & backing vocals
KATE ROGERS: harmony & backing vocals
OH SUSANNA: harmony & backing vocals
CHLOE WATKINSON: harmony & backing vocals

And I would be remiss if I didn’t give a huge shout-out to my co-producer and recording engineer CHRIS STRINGER, who has ably helped me guide the ship through more studio days than originally anticipated.
In the next update I will announce the song order and album title.

Last, for Toronto-area fans there will be a special CD release concert at Hugh’s Room Live on Saturday June 16th. Tickets are now available directly from the club.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Yours musically,
Jory Nash

Hi Everyone!

Here's a quick update to let you know what is happening with my new CD project that you so kindly supported...

I am neck deep arranging songs for the March recording sessions. We have a lot of work to get done in 7 days of recording. I have 2 days where I will be doing some solo guitar work and vocals and 2 full days with a band, and another 3 days for additional overdubs. The band will be made up of the following amazing players:

Gary Craig, percussion. Anyone who has seen my Sweet Sounds of the 70s show has seen Gary Craig play. He's amazing! He's also the drummer in Bruce Cockburn's band, roots rock group Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, and the touring version of the hit TV show NASHVILLE. So I'm super happy to be recording with Gary for the first time. Gary will be appearing on 6 songs.

Devon Henderson, bass. Devon came highly recommended by my co-producer and engineer Chris Stringer. Devon has worked with Justin Rutledge, Amelia Curran and many more. Devon has already over dubbed parts on 2 tunes and he will be playing on another 6 tunes in March. He's a wonderfully melodic bass player who is tremendously versatile.

Robbie Grunwald, piano & organ. Robbie appeared on my last CD (The Many Hats of Jory Nash) and is a much in-demand studio and touring musician, recently working with Donovan Woods, Jill & Matt Barber and Royal Wood. Robbie was also my camper at summer camp many years ago but that's another story.

Jason Fowler: various guitars. Jason has already laid down tracks on 4 songs and will be playing on several more with the full band. Jason has appeared on every recording I've ever done and is one of my favourite guitarists.

Dean Drouillard, guitar. Dean is someone I've known and admired for years and I'm really excited to record with him for the first time. Stints with Sarah Harmer, Rose Cousins, Amelia Curran, and Great Lake Swimmers have cemented his reputation as a go-to musician and first-call guitarist who’s as comfortable in studio as he is on the road. He’s also known for his golden ears as a producer, directing recordings for the likes of Royal Wood, Christine Bougie, and Justin Rutledge. Dean will be appearing on 3 full band tunes.

In addition to the band, cello man extraordinaire Kevin Fox will be dropping by to play on 2 tracks. I am still looking to add a few more musicians to play on individual tracks and will let you know who these folks are next update.

I am also waiting to see the design for the limited edition Tshirt...that should be completed within the next 2 weeks.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to send them my way!

Warmly, and with thanks,

Jory Nash
