Capuchin monkeys need more space

Donation protected
******            UPDATE            ******

The construction of the new enclosure has been finished! Since we wanted to build it as soon as possible, and we weren't able to raise enough funds through donations in time, Francine (founder of the Monkey Island Foundation) took a bank loan in order to make this project a reality.

The enclosure might be finished but we still need to pay for it, so if you find it in your heart to donate to this project you would be helping us pay back the loan. Keep in mind that we cover all of the monkeys expenses through private funding, so your help in funding this project would allow us use other donations to cover their regular expenses (vet check-ups, vaccines, feeding costs, etc).

You can see how the new enclosure looks like in the pictures below. We added plenty of enrichment items after the structure was completed.

Note: This is not the end of it, we're already working on a new project to build a bridge that will connect the capuchin's new enclosure with another mangrove island that's right next to ours. The bridge will allow the capuchins to have the whole island for themselves to enjoy and roam freely. Sketches for the new bridge are included below.

******            ORIGINAL POST BELOW            ******

As our rescue efforts have grown, we have received more Capuchin monkeys than we currently have adequate space for. Toutie, Poncho, Rabi, and Wiki need to be able to climb and swing from trees, to chase one another, play, forage for food, and be stimulated.

The vision of Monkey Island Foundation Founder, Francine Roy, is to expand their current enclosure and build it up and into the mangrove while respecting the natural environment. The new multi-level playground would encompass trees and branches and allow the Capuchins to live more freely in their natural habitat, yet provide them with safety and security at the same time.

This project will be completed by native Ngäbe-Buglé workers, helping not only our beloved Capuchin monkeys, but also the economy of the local Ngäbe community.

The Monkey Island Foundation:

Our goal is to adopt or rescue monkeys in need of a new home, whether they are rescued from the pet trade, abandoned, or if their owners can no longer look after them. Our refuge is located on a private island in Bocas del Toro, Panama and provides the perfect habitat for the monkeys who reside here.

Our priority is on education, as we believe it is the first step in conservation. We strive to illustrate to local community and tourists the irreversible effects of removing monkeys from the wild, as once they have been made into pets, it is very difficult to reintroduce them back into nature.

We work hard to give these monkeys a second chance at being wild, in a safe and socially stimulating environment where they can be with other monkeys. They are provided with food, toys, and enrichment items, but most importantly, with lots of care and love. Through private funding and donations we cover all of the monkeys expenses regarding their veterinarian check ups, vaccines, feeding costs, transportation, and maintenance of their enclosures.

We have received quotes on the proposed project , which includes the wood, wood posts, transportation and delivery of materials, salary of workers, nails, tools, mesh, staples, paint, and permitting fees.

100% of your donations will go directly to the construction of this new enlarged enclosure.

Thank you very much for your help! Learn more about each monkey we look after by clicking here

This is our inspiration for the new Capuchin enclosure. We envision a multi-level playground which will weave through the mangrove trees.

This is some of the wood we have received so far to begin the construction:
