Need some help paying vet bills

Those of you that know me, know how much my dog means to me. Brutus is more than a pet, he's my child!
This last weekend he got very ill pretty quick. He stopped eating, drinking and did not want to walk or move on his own to the point of needing to be carried out to potty. His little eyes were so swollen he couldn't keep them open, he was obviously in pain. Because it was Memorial Day my only option was to bring him in to the emergency vet office.
After a quick exam the vet said he needed to stay at least one night and have blood and urine tests done. Even after being there for more than 24 hours we don't have a prognosis, but he was determined to be stable enough to come home. 
We were sent home with medications and the goal to just keep him eating. But now I have a giant bill to pay off even though we have no answers.
Now that we are home he is doing much better! He ate a full cup of scrambled eggs and chicken this morning with his medications and is showing signs of wanting to play, he's just still pretty tired.
I hate the idea of asking for help but with my husband in school our finances are already tight, hopeful for help and a small miracle!
